They're useful. I'm a cyclist and always use them where available. It stops cars cutting across you, aids visibility and doesn't actually impair cars at all if theres no cyclist there. Think about it. You're just a few metres behind where you would be otherwise. Grow up.

they are not something i particularly complain about though, i would like to see all traffic lights with a nice gap between the lights and the stop light, i am fed up of awkward junctions where the only set of light which isn't generally obscured by traffic is virtually above your head
As a cyclist, I find them useful. Its better still when you know the phasing of the lights, its gives you an area to track stand in and then you can hammer away from the lights, often before the car driver has realised the lights have changed smile

Just another pov; I'm 100% responsible for my actions therefore I'll hang back until I decide it's safe to overtake. No offence to the cyclist (or horse rider) who means well but tbh, I don't know you or what you can see ahead & I'll make my own decisions thanks.
With the 'other' cycling thread In full pelt at the moment it got me thinking about this one so have resurrected the thread.
A guy I was training a few days ago followed a cyclist quite patently due to no safe opportunities to pass. We weren't holding anyone up and were far enough back not to intimidate the cyclist. After a while (a minute, possibly 90 seconds) the cyclist started to look over his shoulder and then decided he'd wave us past on approach to a sharp left bend onto a narrow bridge (off Caton road heading towards Halton, Lancaster for anyone who knows the area). Fortunately both the driver and I spotted the oncoming car on the bridge before feeling obliged to follow the cyclist's instruction.
When we discussed the incident later, the driver told of once being shouted at by a cyclist for not passing sooner rolleyes I've seen a few get a bit 'twitchy' if you've been behind them for a while too. Nevertheless, I'll make my own decisions thank you.
