Hi all
I have recently got a new job which requires me to commute on twisty slow B roads and the 28 mpg from.my old 2.0 mondeo is not cutting the mustard to be honest.so the desicion has been made to purchase a small diesel with hope of at least 60sh mpg..Budget will be no more than 2k max. I have taken to the 1.9 tdi vw polo's which I think should fit the bill nicely.any body got any experience with these preferbably I think the 110 and 130 bhp models.all other suggestions are welcome to.
Sorry about another what car.but you guys seem the best to ask. So to summerise
1.6 + tdi diesel
A bit of poke so it's not to boring
No more more than 2k
Around polo size
Thank you for any help

A good condition Peugeot 306 HDi, with some change as well. Refined 2 Litre common rail diesel engine, capable of at least 50MPG when driven with some spirit and most importantly they are very comfortable.

206 hdi 2.0. My wife used to have one for her old 50/60 mile A road commute and regularly saw 50mpg.

Only 90bhp but happy cruising at motorway speeds and had a chuckable feel to it.

Believe it or not the golf diesel I have has just surprised me, on a 300 mile drive with motorway and B road managed 57 mpg and on the motorway we wasn't hanging around, 2.0 tdi 140.

The wife just sold hers but a 206 1.4hdi would be perfect and only £30 a year to tax. She sold hers after 95000 trouble free miles purely as we out grew it

mk4 golf worth looking at as prob a bit more on budget and imo looks better than the polo especially with a set of montreal alloys!

we had a 02 tdi with the ALH engine which is very reliable and pretty much bomb proof, it was just 90bhp but plenty of poke.

easily returned 50 to 60mpg daily.

avoid the sdi they are prone to a lot if faults which is ironic considering they are sans turbo, also they are crap slow!

the golf gt tdis are prone to a cooling fault with the fans which can be a pain to fix and can cook the head.

Also imo avoid pugs, renaults and citroen, I've had the lot and they are total crap for this age and budget of car, you'll have a plethora of gremlins!

if you can find a polo dune they are a bit different I like them - they are like marmite, but with better residuals over the standard polo!

To counter the French are st argument we ran a 1.5dci modus for 150,000 miles and over that time averaged 63mpg and only problem we had was a failed EGR valve, we even filled it with petrol and ran it till it broke down, flushed it and it worked fine.

I've also got a honda civic 1.5i petrol which returns 500miles to a tank. (Ten gallon tank) which is obviously 50mpg. The car only cost £500.

I did a 50 mile each way commute for 18 months in a Polo 1.9 TDI 130.

It easily did 50+mpg and was very reliable needing only consumables (tyres, brake pads etc). It wasn't the most refined place to be on the M27 but it kept up with the traffic easily and the seats in the GT model were comfortable enough.

Tricky for £2k, lot of demand for a cheap small diesel, some of the small diesels are quite good chose one with decent power.

Polo tdi 1.9 sport 100 will do the job they come with a good spec ( ours had heated sports seats, dual zone climate, 6 disk cd etc). Really comfy for long trips, goes well and should average 45 mpg, these handle so much better than the mk4 golfs so I would choose a Polo 100 over a Golf. Unlikely to find a Polo Gtd130 for under £2k, main difference from the 100 is the 6 gears.

Something else to look at is the Colt CZ2 Di-D these have a 1500cc Mercedes tdi engine and go really well for a small diesel, cheap as chips £2k gets you a 2006 model with sensible miles, we've had one for 2 years and it averages over 45 mpg and has been cheap to run didn't need anything in the past 2ok miles other than annual service and one broken spring. Not as good as the Polo but will be a fair bit newer and much lower miles if you are sticking to a max budget of £2k.

I think 60MPG in conditions when your Mondeo's only doing 28 is a big ask. - Some recent cars may do it but I doubt you'll be able to buy one for circa £2k. The problem is that small diesels are in demand at the moment and so the prices are therefore high (big petrols are a bargain now). I used to commute much further than I do now and had a Citroen C4 Coupé 1.6HDI. That did about 50 MPG on a B-road commute and it's a much more interesting car than a Polo etc. Reliability was pretty good - only minor niggles.

I'm starting to belive that 60 mpg was a bit optimistic.50 ish is more realistic.starting to like the golfs now but they all seem to be 100k + in our price range.will keep hunting something ideal will turn up ...

Anything A4 size or smaller with a 1.9 Tdi PD will easily do you want. Wife gets 60+mpg from her well used A4 115 PD running about the back roads. The older ones seem to be more efficient than the newer ones.

I have an Alfa 147 JTDm and thrap it everywhere.

I've seen 48 - 53 on the motorway and 42 - 44 around town. I'm very pleased with that.

Edit too add that previous to this I had the latest F20 BMW 120d with the all singing and dancing ZF8 speed gearbox and start stop thingamybob, the Alfa is better on juice.....

Mk2 Seat Toledo 1.9 TDI, spacious, quite comfortable and well equipped. I've got a 1.9 TDI for going to the tip and doing the commute, does 50mpg all day. They are stupidly cheap, barely more than scrap value, but as reliable as the taxi spec Octavias.
