Hello

This is my first post so be kind!

Im after some help and advice really....

I own a just over 2 year old Seat Mii.

The number plates have started to fade very badly on both the front and the back.

When my car had its service i mentioned it and they said the plates are not a warranty part and that the problem is sun bleaching, when i said i don`t see any other newish cars with this problem they said that number plates can "go at any time".

Now i don't want to bash the British weather but its not been that sunny the last 2 years, its not as if the car is outside every day in Tenerife.

My local dealer said they can replace them for £20 a set but its a 50 mile round trip which would be a massive pain to go just to have them bolted on.

If anyone has any advice or thoughts i would be very grateful.

Thanks, Matt

Just order a set online and fit them yourself, will be cheaper, easier and you wouldnt be replacing them with plates that will be faded again in 2 years.

Welcome to PH. thumbup

Poor show from dealer. For the sake of a few quid the good-will they could get is cheap compared to the negativity displayed.

They don't still have the protective film over the top do they?

I know that sounds odd, but some plates come with an almost clear film that peels off. Maybe that's faded?

If not, it's pretty stty they won't just knock you up some new plates, they cost a couple of quid each really!

Halfords can make and fit a pair of numberplates for you if you want a reasonably priced and hassle fee service.

Ebay, £10 for a set including fittings/coloured caps.

Just make sure you buy road-legal ones, not show-plates.

My money is on this - looks like the film is peeling at the top of the pic. Just take it off.

If they do still have the film on then that's an even worse reflection on the dealer that they didn't identify that but chose to blame the sun!

My defender has the original plate on the back

its 16 years old

Its not faded

I've never seen a faded plate in the UK

Unless the dealer has sourced his plate from completely different place to 99.9% of the dealers in the UK then he is bullstting

Its the protective film still on the plates

Personally I'd be looking for a full refund of the car or a brand new replacement at least. This is simply not on!

Go in and start quoting SOGA at full volume on a busy Saturday afternoon to guarantee results. I'd be visiting Trading Standards as well as calling Ann Robinson to get these sharks closed down!

Or maybe realise that it's not a big deal and go down your local motorfactors and get a set for £20 or take the helpful offer from the poster above. Life is far too short to be concerned over things like this.

Sounds like your dealer is being very short sighted.

The last two cars I bought (secondhand) I mentioned I would be putting my private plate on it, both times the dealers insisted on supplying plates with my private reg - in the boot, pre-drilled. Needless to say both sets of plates had their name on them for legal and advertising reasons.

OK I didn't use them as I prefer my non-logo'd, undrilled stuck on plates but the dealer ones are OK for my trailer board!

I have noticed many new plates are screen printed onto rather than behind the clear perspex, some appear to have been 'worn away' on quite new cars - a point to consider when buying replacements - I even think there was a Halfords plate thread to this effect on here.

Final point, have you tried t-cutting the plates to see if this helps?
