What's the best estate car ever?
Discussion
Torn between the Citroen DS23 Safari my dad had - extra seats in the boot, adjustable ride height (useful for towing), ultra-smooth ride (there's a reason they were the camera car of choice at race courses), steering headlights and, best of all, semi-auto- so that even when I couldn't reach the pedals I could have a drive on the beach.
Or a bog standard Volvo 245 - nothing beats it as a small bike transporter (load 125s straight in) and it'll also swallow the entire bonnet/wing assembly of a Triumph Herald. Solid, robust, replace body panels with a spanner and enough grunt in the engine to drive home over the Mendips on the choke when the throttle cable broke.

Agreed, mad they didn't make one bar a prototype I have seen floating about these parts. A subtly beefier 540 touring with the under crackers to match would have been brilliant.
The e39 touring had a different rear suspension layout to the saloon, to make the boot wider, so would have meant a bespoke shell to fit the m5 suspension and LSD. So you'd just end up with a '550i' on posh wheels :-) For me it's one of these
In that colour, with a 24V engine and a spanish waiter box
Just got a real soft spot for them - had a few of the lower spec'd versions in the past (CDX 6 pots) but never owned one of the last of the line.
Cheap as chips - reasonable one up for sale in the club up for £700 (just not the right colour for me), huge load area with the seats down, easy to maintain aside from the tendency to rust like most 90's Vauxhall/Opel variants and it has my favorite engine under the bonnet so close to 150 mph performance and everyone just views it as an old Vauxhall.
