yes The E46 3-Series has aged well too (and I'm not saying that just because we have one tongue out ). There's just something about that generation of BMWs that seems "missing" from the subsequent cars.

At the risk of being Captain Obvious, you have to consider if it's a 'one car does it all' or a big load lugger that complements another, more focused car.

If the former, I'm going with the V8 RS4 Avant.
If the latter a Volvo V70.

I've run big estates for years and wouldn't fancy a tip run in the RS4 nor a hot lap of the Nurburgring in a V70!

Yes, ok. Captain Obvious!

Perfect
Better than an XM?
Without a doubt yes.

We've had three CX estates and about a dozen XM - all diesel. XM is very good but CX is bigger, properly quirky and much sharper to drive thanks to the DIRAVI steering.

BMW Hartge H27 E30
1) look good personal taste but I think so
2) be comfortable; very with the sports seats
3) perform and handle respectably; engine and handling upgrades so should be adequate
4) have reasonable running costs and not be stupidly expensive to buy. originally to buy not cheap, the upgrades could add a serious chunk to the purchase price but now? Cheap to buy, insure and run

My holy grail

laugh

On a serious note, I wonder how the E90 & F30 will fare at 10+ years (the oldest E90s are 2005 models so not quite there yet) and whether they'll have any equivalent issues due to age rather than mileage.

I think at 22 years old some blemishes are forgiven! It's it lasted so long it deserves some TLC. Oddly my '91 MX5 is relatively rust-free, sills and all.
