another what car thread with another twist

Ok. I tried the MX5 forum without a reasonable bite.
Since pistonheads is basically made up of a group of men implanted with a microchip straight from a planet called eunos i thought id hit GG.

I may get a day out of this before the mods move it.

My ex wants an mx5, we're trying to keep things amicable, so I said I'd help out. I figured this place is the best place to ask.

Criteria is -
Mx5,
4k ukp max budget.
Reliable
Economical
hard top included
entertaining to drive.

I know nothing about mx5's apart from the model names and engine sizes.

So masses, what is the answer?

Theres the mk1, 2, 2.5 and 3.
I remember hearing one of the engines were very gutsy. Theres a 1.8 or 1.6.
Some rust more than others - mk2, some arent as nice a drive.
