I've got a DISCO 3 HSE and recently went into a dealer (Guildford) and asked about when they would be replacing properly, i.e. D4 with proper full size D5 as I would like to order one. They told me that they didn't have any pictures and no time scale. I'm aware that this DISCO SPORT isn't the answer (too small) but does anyone know of the realistic timescale or indeed if there will genuinely be a proper replacement? RRS even with 7 seats is too small, as already mentioned it's a 'luggage' thing.

Currently in France with the family (5 inc 3 boys who are only getting bigger....) in my DISCO 3 with 5 bikes (4 on the tow bar + one inside) + biking stuff + top box with other 'stuff' + big electric cool box. Not sure what else (No suggestions for transit please) would achieve all this and cruise safely at 130kmh (so the answer is white van then!). Answers on a post card (or here) gratefully received.....

Volvo are releasing the new XC90 soon and the current model is pretty spacious so if the new one is of a similar size it may do what you need.

The C pillar designs on the even earlier Zephyr/Zodiacs were nicked from Bentley. Plagiarism is a way of life in the industry. There are not many designers who are truly original.

They haven`t said when a replacement will appear. My guess, on past form, is that a concept model (loosely based on the Discovery Vision vehicle they recently displayed) will appear in about a year, and a new full size version will appear in 2016. JLR will be busy next year introducing the Jaguar XE and this smaller Discovery and swapping the out the old in line 4s for their new engine.

For van lovers, there is a commercial version of the D4 available. I met an owner at the recent Windsor horse show. She found it ideal for towing the horse box and stuffing all the kit, feed and hay bales in the back (it comes with 2 seats only). It could be the basis for a nice camper too.

My answer is...wait for it...keep the car you've got for now.

- Discoveries are absolutely ideal for this and unless there are specific problems with your current one, or you want a last-of-the-line, top-end Disco 4 SDV6 (which is what I will look for in a few years to replace my last-of-the-line Disco 2 ES Premium), there's no reason to change just yet.

Apart from the bulkhead, it doesn't really offer anything over folding the seats down (obviously, other than the VAT back - which is why it exists). Still has the same door trims, boot side trims, roof lining etc. to get trashed.

Where I live these are de rigueur for the prosperous 2point4 family travelling the mile or so to school. I see dozens of blue/black ones in the morning being driven badly by blond stressed MILFs who can hardly see over the steering wheel. I would get one because they must be good, but EVERYONE seems to have one.

Look forward to seeing what these look like, they seem to look good underneath their 'camo'.

I was a little worried I wouldn't like the new raft of Land Rover/Range Rover products, as my LR taste could be described as 'old school' (I've had 5, and my newest was a 2001 Discovery which looks very similar to the original Discovery which was launched in 1989), but the new models are a much needed breath of fresh air.

I hope they do an RS version biggrin

Only the Range Rover Sport is available with 7 seats in the RR range. FFRR is 5 or 4, Evoque is 5.

My girlfriends currently got a 2004 Freelander TD4, and was considering replacing it with a new one. We'd discussed waiting until the new Disco Sport came out to replace the current FL2, but looking at this I'm concerned she'll think it's too long for her to park easily at work and won't want it.

Am I alone in thinking it looks quite long compared to the current/older Freelander?

Apparently it's the same length if not a smidge shorter than the current model.

It has a longer wheelbase which is what makes it look longer.

Wait for the new Disco, you're right that you're short on options without going for an MPV like the new Merc V-Class (very nice btw) http://bit.ly/UKAvUk

New Volvo XC90 is being launched soon, that promises lots of tech and is always a proper 7-seater like the Disco.

A FFRR can hit 100k - i have more trouble believing a current top spec is nearly 55k.I honestly believe Joe Public would not put one at more than 40k max.
You couldn't be more wrong! No one cares about the actual figure the car's 'worth', they only car what the monthly payments will be and whether they can afford that
But the list price surely has some part in the monthly payment figure?
Don't blame LR for charging that much but a 40-45k car max imho.

Agree with those that say 'if it ain't broke don't fix it' and that's where I'll stay. Can't justify 62K for new D4 that will be OBE within a couple of years and the depreciation that will entail, would rather stay with 'perfect' model I've got and then change with new model.

As others have said here, if you get a 'good one' they're fantastic cars.

But they look like a transit van?
That wasn't the reason. Where we live, with a drive onto a narrow car lined street, a Disco may be just a bit too big. The Freelander replaced a Mazda CX-7 which for us was just right in terms of space - inside and outside. I would have replaced it with another one, but they stopped making them and the Freelander, though a lovely car is just a tad too small.

I am thinking, now we have lived in our house for a bit and are used to the narrow road that perhaps a Disco may be the way forward, when it comes time to change. I think the new RRS is about the size I would be happy with but sadly new that is too much money.
