And why have they done that? Because they want people to think they've got a better, faster model. So it doesn't change the fact that it's not a sleeper, put an S6 next to a base model TDI with no mods whatsoever and I guarantee you only the biggest cynic on the planet would think the S6 was slower.
As I said earlier, the fact that everyone wants an "all show, no go" 4-pot anti-sleeper in S/M/AMG trim now makes the real deal look somewhat inconspicuous. Its a good thing in my mind. Point aside, I have always thought the S6's look rather discreet and underwhelming - hardly anyone would distinguish it from a TDI.

Maybe not a total sleeper but to the average Joe it was just an old A6 saloon.
Loved it!
Silver mirrors, big wheels and the front bumper being big giveaways to Joe Bloggs that the car is at least not just 'an old A6 saloon'.

The general populace may be idiots but they have a vague idea of what a faster model looks like.
Every second '00s Audi here in Ireland seems to have been converted to this spec, with an additional "RS4" or "RS6" badge stuck on the back to complement the TDi one. It's extremely easy to blend in with a real one here
And why have they done that? Because they want people to think they've got a better, faster model. So it doesn't change the fact that it's not a sleeper, put an S6 next to a base model TDI with no mods whatsoever and I guarantee you only the biggest cynic on the planet would think the S6 was slower.
As above, to the vast majority S/RS/M/AMG is now just viewed as a trim-level on base model cars. They have no comprehension of what these badges mean, or that they could in anyway signify a car of higher performance. 99% of people have no clue what my RS4 is other than an old Audi estate with some spangly bits that have been added at some stage. Sure it doesn't even have an exhaust on either side like the new TDis wink

If certain individuals modify their cars to impress the general public, I would suggest that it doesn't work

Subaru Forester - I presume it's the 2.5 XT Turbo - circa 230bhp as standard.

Mine's not standard evil
V8RX7, what have you done to yours?

PS I do like your car history, a splendid mix of sporting chariots, especially the humble TVR S2 and the 944 Turbo, chalk and cheese...and both hugely entertaining.
Mine had 3 Cats - all now removed and a larger bore fitted - that alone livened it up no end but I live remapped to be safe - 273bhp.

I enlarged the wheels to 17's (actually I downgraded mine as a PO had fitted 18s but they looked silly)

Uprated rear ARB and fitted impreza 4 pot brakes.

Hopefully tomorrow I'll have fitted Impreza suspension to it.

Thanks I get bored easily - I'll have to update the garage.

Back in the day...hahaha a Sleeper was a standard car with a big lump shoe horned in it. For instance a fella on our street when I was about 12 (late 70's ) had a l plate (73) Vauxhall Victor with a 5.7 later v8, this was apparently quite an easy job and my Missus' brother couldn't afford a Savage Capri so made his own out of his 1.6 mk.2 but with a v4 out of a Tranny.
They were sleepers not the manufactured off self stuff of today.

If you get underneath those 2 exhausts are actually 4 exhausts.
Interesting! What's it like to drive/own? There's not a lot about them online...

Great colour by the way.

Seriously? Tell me what do chrome mirrors on Audi's mean? Not to mention the badging. Couldn't be less of a sleeper.

It's great. Very comfy. Huge. More softly sprung than the Scout but still handles well. Not comparing it to anything sporty as that's not its forte.

Dsg gearbox is great and suits the engine. It's like driving a Super Star Destroyer. It does feel very rapid which I suppose it is with 0-60 in 5.6 seconds.

Loads of kit as standard including xenons, leather, electric seats, active cruise etc.

It's a shame Skoda don't adopt some better colours. They are mostly grays, silvers etc.

Thanks for the reply. You might yet tempt me! hehe

So, fun to be had if not a sporty drive?

Yes it's fun. Not on the twisties but certainly at the traffic lights if you feel that way out. It also sounds ok when you give it some welly....

The 4x4 allows you to use the performance. No scrabbling tyres pulling away from islands etc. Even when it's damp greasy you just put you foot down and it takes off like a scalded cat.

However much a nice wagon, not really a sleeper is it.

Sleeper. What's that? A car that has go out of all proportion to it's appearance? The trouble is, quite a few cars like that are knocked out every day by the mainstream manufactures. Most have slightly wider wheels, maybe an extra exhaust pipe, and a badge. A couple of mates have such sleepers, one a 2006 XJR, and the other a 2004 RS6 (500bhp). The average car driver has the observational ability of a bat, not 1 in 1000 will spot the fast version of an everyday car, especially if the rear badge is missing. I tend to call a sleeper a car that looks a bit rough, but goes like stink when required.

That the owner has poor taste ?

I presume from your attitude "everyone knows" they mean it's an RS - newsflash - you're a nerd - 99.9% of people don't.

That's a genuinely interesting response. You see, I think that a big Skoda estate which looks almost identical to the non-flashy 1.4 petrol and 2.0 diesel variants is the epitome of what a sleeper is.

I think if you lined up a car park full of new but slow cars and a sprinkling of hot haychbacks (Golf GTi, Focus ST and so on), few non-car people would think it's one of the quickest cars there.

So I'm very interested: Why do you think it's not a sleeper?

I don't think stickyfinger knows what he's talking about or he does and his post was meant to ... Well... Troll...

Anyone who knows anything about the new Superb's would not have posted what he did as it only highlights his lack of knowledge :-)

The question is wrong, it is never about looks.

Concider the non-nurds that don't know what it may be ? Are they ever surprised if it does go like ste off a shovel ? :

I would say they would not be surprised: lots of "those types can go fast". They may not know exactly it's E=Number or whatever is, but they would not be surprised as they are told everyday on Tv. Adverts that they all are.

So can a Audi/BMW for example ever be a Sleeper/Q-Car ?.....for me the answer is no.
