Range Rover Sport SVR 'ring time

Of course it was going to happen! 550hp SUV laps the Nordschleife, faster than a 1 M Coupe too

Eight minutes and 14 seconds, even in a world of NISMO GT-Rs and Porsche 918 Spyders, is still a very quick Nordschleife lap. That's the time Range Rover claims the new Sport SVR has set as part of its 'exhaustive testing schedule' at the 'ring. Its reputedly the fastest production SUV lap ever recorded too, which sounds horribly like laying down the gauntlet for an ML63 AMG Black Series, Cayenne GT2 or X5 M GTS. Please no.

Destination Nurburgring anyone?
Destination Nurburgring anyone?
However, regardless of opinions on the car or the current fashion for 'ring lap bragging rights, 8min 14sec is quicker than a fair few other lot of cars. As well as the aforementioned 1 M, there's the Renault Megane R26.R (8:17), Lexus IS-F (8:18), Skyline GT-R R32 (8:22) and E46 M3 (8:22). It's just a second off the E60 M5 and Mercedes C63 AMG too.

Mike Cross has described the car as having "outstanding on-road performance capabilities" and, before any controversy emerges, the car was 'a standard production example'. So as it will be sold, not shorn of any equipment or indeed enhanced with anything either. We wouldn't bank on this livery being offered though.

All that's been announced about SVR sales is that the cars will be in showrooms in 2015. Therefore expect a full debut in production spec with prices towards the end of this year, probably at the Paris or LA motor shows.

On seeing this I immediately thought back a few years to the BMW X5 Le Mans concept, I think even the SVR would fold compared to this....

The slow speed stuff may be a bit tricky though, from memory you couldn't give it all the beans in the first couple of gears as the drivetrain couldn't handle it. I suppose that's what happens when you put a Le Mans V12 into an X5!

Utterly pointless, but ever so brilliant.

Does that mean that all the Yummy Mummies can leave 10 minutes later to drop their little darlings off at school?

That's an amazing lap time for an SUV.
I have to wonder what the mpg figure was for the lap....
I'm sure the nay-sayers will have plenty to say about the article, but I have always thought that the only way to compare vehicles is to drive them all in a similar manner, i.e. flat out. It would be difficult to extrapolate any meaningful results in any other way, and yet I would also acknowledge the irrelevance of a lap of the 'Ring to everyday driving.

The naked four pipes look good. Seen a dark blue one, which as much as I hate to say it looks quite nice (for an SUV).

Yep. Pointless, stupid and irrelevant. But brilliant.

An off roader that can no longer go off road. Retarded. I will see thousands in Surrey shortly.

Erm. I think you'll find it still can very much go off road. It has the same air suspension, twin speed transfer case and Terrain Response as the standard car. Not that any owners will ever take it properly off roading of course....

Despite its on-road credentials, Land Rover has also said the model will come with a twin-speed transfer case for both high and low gear ratios, as well as a wading depth of 850mm.

Have you tried driving one off road? I imagine it is a fair bit better than the other cars mentioned in the article so what's not to like?

Why do you think it can't be taken off road?

Impressed it ran for 8min without rusting or suffering an electrical failure.

I went to look at an L322 once, during the walk around and sit inside before the test drive the passenger electric seat broke so the salesman had to sit in it like an adult in a kiddie car with knees under his chin... ironically it wasn't that but the 12mpg that put me off most :-)

Cheers for sharing- never heard of that- looks awesome!

EDIT: You can put those wheels on any car and it looks x10 better- so timeless.

All of which is rendered useless (or less useful) with a sporty bodykit that ruins clearance. Also, which tyres are they using? Unless they're all terrains, all this thing will do off-road is spin all four wheels.

I can understand a performance SUV but I'd prefer mine to be more "Bowler", rather than an "XF-R on stilts". As it looks, I'd rather the upgraded engine and drivetrain with a standard exterior and sensible wheels. smile

Why you'd want to drive a RRS around the 'ring instead of a 1M coupe though is more difficult to explain...... ;-)

(and, of course, after that single flying lap, the RRS will be 1) out of fuel, 2) have no tyres left, 3) have cooked its brakes, but most seriously 4) bored it's driver to tears)

This is yet more Pub Ammo for the sort of inconsiderate idiots who buy and then brag about their RRS's...............

Does it have the same wheels and tires?
Good job it’s so fast though. Harder to see how ugly it is.
