The opposite actually AC being a British Company. Caroll Shelby being the American who stuck a Ford V8 into an AC Ace, making the Cobra. biggrin

The Yanks call them Shelby-American Cobras because that's what they are.

They were never badged or sold as the AC Cobra in the USA.

I appreciate there were US Cobras but I think the car in question is an AC Cobra. Isn't it?

Yes it is, one of the 40-something original RHD cars made IIRC. As I pointed out, it's got the wrong badge on the front, should have the AC one not the Cobra one smile

Depending on who you ask depends on what they were called but I very much doubt that the AC brand was completely erased from them.

Anyways....

It wasn't, the AC scripted pedals were still retained on the Shelby-American cars, but the simple fact remains that the vast majority of cars sold were Shelby-American Cobra's, and given it was his idea and had very little to do with AC other than them being contracted to build the rolling chassis and body, and Shelby granting them to being able to sell the handful of cars built for the UK market as AC's they should be foremostly called Shelby Cobra, not AC Cobra.

So AC built the cars and Shelby put the Ford engine in. wink Anyway to an impressionable car mad 10 year old in the mid-60s who would occasionally see one of these rumbling up the road, they were "AC Cobras" when I looked them up in "Motor" magazine or any of all the other car mags that I had scattered around the house! Since you've explained it I guess this is because they were RHD cars. smile

To me Carroll Shelby was the weird one dressed in farmers dungarees and a straw hat who partnered Roy Salvadori to victory at Le Mans with Aston Martin biggrin

Agree about the "pumped up" nature of the later cars, not to my taste at all. This one looks nice is it the same model as Horner's? You can understand the confusion though, it's LHD and called an AC Cobra. confused

Yup, me too. When I was a car mad kid, my Dad had a friend we used to visit in Thames Ditton who lived about half a mile up from the AC factory, and that was my first exposure to a Cobra probably around 1969/70 and we were out for a walk when this bellowing thing came roaring by and I was dumbstruck….and all I heard was the word Cobra from Dad’s mate, who obviously knew all about what had gone on down the road in the previous years. I guess as this was some time after Cobra production ended, it was a customer car coming back for some service work or repair and was on a test drive or the owner had just collected it.

Been hooked on the bloody things ever since, and even flew out the South Carolina back in 1991 for the annual SAAC convention and got to very briefly meet the man himself.

The AC or not AC is a bit like the Vauxhall Monaro. We all know it’s really a Holden with Vauxhall badges for the UK market, it’s the same with the Cobra. It’s a Shelby Cobra with AC badges for the UK market. Ford and Shelby were the money and William Hurlock was just glad that a scruffy Texan walked through his door with a small 260 V8 under his arm with the idea of dropping into the Ace, as AC had lost the use of the Bristol engine for the Ace and the Ruddspeed tuned Zephyr Six replacement was not a lightweight thing.

Yes it’s the same as Horner’s. Non-original Lemans stripes for a 289 though, no doubt added later if it’s an original rather than a newer continuation Cobra which it could be?
The confusion over the name will continue forever. The years of fights over the rights to the car from the 70’s onwards doesn’t help. The Cobra name and badge rights is owned by Ford, but lawyers have made money over the rest of it in enough squabbles over the years.

No such thing as punching above your weight when you're a millionaire.

Didn't Geri persue him pretty hard? Fairly sure I read that she basically stalked him across more than one F1 event around the pitlane, while he was still with his partner of course. She's at least half as much to blame.

i think she's punching above her weight , In his position he could have any bit of candy he wants , not sure why he'd choose a washed up old, menopausal ex karaoke singer.

You write as if

a: you know her personally

b: you're a little bitter

Did you used to go out with her?
