Really gutted about Drive+ at the minute, the videos are a trickle and i don't feel my money is well spent. I enjoyed the Tuned series and Big Muscle but so far its a Harris fest.

They take YT's money and give things a good go, but then when they take normal car enthusiasts money they bugger it up?

You'd at least expect some communication than none at all when you're taking real customers money, rather than getting subsidy.

It was pretty obvious what would happen, but it's sad to see it actually be a reality frown

Does anybody want to guess the excuses?

My shot at it:

They aren’t making enough money because of completely unexpected content piracy so they’ll have to close the youtube channel. They will focus on NBC until they run out of old content to rehash. CH and NC split from the rest of /Drive and do their own thing (yay, I might actually back that!) or CH might take up a position at a big car manufacturer, continuing to make videos but this time officially sponsored. The rest of them crawl back into the hole they came from.
Piracy is evil and ruins everything, et cetera.

If Drive+ doesn't work for CH. Could the world be ready for a Drivers Republic reunion... minus the idiot?

Am I expecting too much, a bit more content for the cash. Doesn't need to be slick, subject matter and journalism more important than production values.

It looks like there is a new video, but only as a 3 minute version on the free channel, the full version isn't on Drive+ yet as far as I can see (I've not subscribed so maybe it doesn't show. If it isn't there as a full version however that seems a strange business method - why offer a taster if you haven't got the whole thing available? Not much point in asking me to subscribe at the end of the video if I can't immediately watch the full video whilst my appetite has been wetted.

Good journalist, good video crew, pretty atrocious business people would be one way of looking at it.

The Drive+ version is in my feed, but on trying to view I'm told "not available in your country" :bang head:

ETA: Now working half an hour later.

Don't worry, there will be a solution by August 11th.

Don't know which year though.

Saw this tweet from them earlier -

"@DRIVE: Sorry about upload delays. The Internet hasn't been kind to us this week. Vids coming.

Be nice when we all have wifi chips in our brains."

Not trying to sound like a dick but if you are running a Youtube channel then surely a reliable broadband connection is the absolute minimum requirement?

Yep, I can load a few minutes worth of footage on a 3G connection to youtube in less than a minute, seriously how can the internet not be kind in a whole week?

next they are going to tweet that they're using satellite internet and the sun flares are affecting the upload rates of their commercial youtube channel.

"Be nice when we have anything at all in our brains."

Poor communication and a total lack of a schedule has really hurt it. People simply won't keep paying without knowing what the output is going to be, it's no rocket science. Evo have the right idea and the quality of their content is very good, even if it's a bit brief. Interestingly Google Australia sponsored the last Mighty Car Mods series of Lend us a car Australia so the funding is still there and it'll be shows like MCM which will continue to be a success because there's a whole culture and community around it. Drive is a one-way street and that just isn't how modern media can survive.

Drive will be gone in a year and CH will thankfully move on to something new as he's pretty great in the right circumstance (i.e. free to do what he wants).

Maybe they were too ahead of their time, but that's what they said about DR too.

I prefer autocar these days, I'm not a huge fan of Sutcliffe but they review cars properly and update regularly.

I find Autocar very hit and miss. They'll do an excellent, well-rounded review one week, and then tell you to buy an M5 over a VXR8 because the paddles mean its easier to drift. I also find Sutcliffe sucks air in extremely loudly on the voiceovers.

At least it's free though.

Without doubt, I fully agree but at least you get frequent half decent content, like I said I'm not really a Sutcliffe fan and the sucking phlegm between the teeth is awful but at least there's something to watch....

Auto express anybody?

If all they had said was this then it could be interpreted as the internet not being kind because they hadn't made enough money from it.

It was a deliberate omission as, in line with what others have said, I find it hard to believe they couldn't upload video to YouTube. Unless maybe they haven't paid their broadband connection bill. Maybe I'm missing something but not sure how a wifi chip in a brain would help get a video from a computer to YouTube.

Internet not kind?

Come on. I've taken a laptop and bound my mobile 3G to get important emails/files up/downloaded before.

What kind of excuses are these for a business with such an income level and paying subscribers?

I've dealt with all manner of crap internet connections, raw files over what seemed like 56k connections, and still managed to make deadlines and get things done in time... even if it means posting HDD in the mail next day delivery to get RAW's somewhere ASAP.

Hate to say it but if that is the best excuse they can come up with, a crap lie, or apparent incompetence, then I worry how they think their venture is going to go anywhere but down fast.
