I'm paid up through paypal (yep you can do it without a credit card!)

I suggest people look at it in a different way.

I currently subscribe to EVO magazine and have done since almost day one of the magazine, prior to Drivers Republic (remember that?) and the two'ing and fro'ing of messers meaden/bovington/harris etc. The subscription of that is approx £40 a year dependent on deals and % savings off.

Rather than looking at how much we all believe they're going to make from it, maybe see it as an extension or a new way of viewing motoring content? I believe this was the mantra for DR before it went south for other reasons and the basic idea is good but was maybe a little before its time?

Also i believe with EVO now offering IPad versions of the magazine and magazines being able to post video content (autocar/evo/car etc. all doing it.) surely the natural progression is to now offer paper form at all but purely electronic versions of the same information? I know for one my missus will be happy due to the amount of EVO magazines which currently reside gathering dust at the bottom of the bookcase!

Finally with Top Gear now an "entertainment" show, surely we should be championing good motoring content through whichever medium is available???!

I for one look forward to the offerings!

I have subscribed for 12mth to give it a go, the way I see it, I enjoy C H tests & think he has evolved into an excellent reviewer, much more so than anything else available. As for the cost, well it's cheaper than the £140 pa I pay for bbc, as I stopped watching every episode of plop gear two seasons ago. I probably watch one program a month on bbc channels & I refuse to watch bbc news.
For me, Drive's test of the P1 was the best & still is the best steer of that car, top gear was typical flashy Michael Bay style photography with usual JC exaggeration for effect & a reviewer who obviously could't drive the car any where near it's potential.
Well personally I thought Drives P1 review was terrible and rather amateurish.

Different strokes for different folks as they say!

God the comments on that first teaser LaFerrari video are stupid.

"we raised drive to where we we think it belongs to, we can take them down again no problem."

Ah yes, the Star Wars argument. It's the fans who made it what it is! No it isn't you numbnuts.
It sucks that /DRIVE content won't be available for free anymore, but what can you do, money doesn't grow on trees.

I'll be subscribing, Chris.

I can't stand those weird people. You see them in the Schumaker thread where they think they own him because they paid to watch him race once so that gives them a right to daily updates. It's an illness born out of making yourself a nobody.

All this demonstrates how youtube dollars equates to couple cans of special brew in real life.

I like to know whats on offer in terms of content and hosts for drive+ and i think NBC stuff should be made available at same time online as its aired which is where value comes in for me for dedicated subscription.

This made me wonder - is YouTube+ any slicker in terms of speed and buffering in general than "normal" YouTube? I normally have a hell of a time with YouTube up here where I stay for work (Aberdeenshire) but at home (Central Scotland) where I have my own broadband setup and pay for a little more speed, it's superb.

I watched the LaFerrari video this morning up here and expected it to be slow and buffer etc. but it was super-slick and streamed perfectly.
Seems to be the same as normal to me. Our normally shocking speeds were even worse than normal last night

Now in this 27 page topic it has probably been discussed before...so I'm sorry, but I can't open drive+.

I'm from Germany and I can't access drive+. Now it might be my mistake, if so please explain to me what I'm doing wrong.
It says that drive+ isn't available in my country. That would be very ironic. After all almost half the cars and a good amount of shows are staged right here.
It would be a real shame. You fanbase here isn't as big as in the US or UK, sure, but we still love the content and Im sure many fans would be extremely sad if we can't get the full drive experience. Hope this gets solved soon or someone can help me out. Cheers

Never, ever pay to be advertised at. I don't understand people that pay £50-£80 a month on Sky, for approximately one quarter of all sky-only content to be adverts. Same with this. I will not pay for something if I've got to sit through adverts before or during, or pop-ups etc.

I haven't worked out what sort of cameras they are but I'd guess its not a mega expensive setup, a pole cam etc? Thats not knocking it, for internet viewing its better than it needs to be.
Exactly, it's not pro video quality with RED cameras and stuff, it's just hand-held SLR and GoPro stuff.

Not that that can't be good, or very good... but it's not THAT expensive to make.

Well if this works out I expect that we'll see a lot more competition too. There is no way that Drive will be good value charging that price for what it's already been offering (in my view), so I easily expect others to bash it every other way on VFM if they think they can get away with charging people directly to view it!

This post and the comments have been very revealing about YT funding and attitudes. No doubt it accounts for the numerous channels devoted to the car (of all kinds and in all situations) to be found on YT. My guess is that many are supported by YT itself as it seeks to disrupt and overturn the traditional media. Clearly it is a game of survival of the fittest - with two years up front YT funding to find out which format and content will pull in the advertising revenue. Drive has failed that test and now needs another business model to survive and continue.

Presumably Drive+ will expect to have to compete with the next group of hot shoes that YT decides to fund in the same way it has funded the original Drive. Add to the mix the fight back by traditional automotive media and the on line offerings direct from the manufacturers themselves (some of whom seem to have migrated to the auto-tv channel on Daily Motion), and it is evident that the new venture has a tough fight on its hands. It will need persistence, luck and much better content if it is to succeed. Just my 2 cents.

Sky + and on demand have pretty much got rid of the need to watch adverts.

i am coming here from reddit. I always watched the movies but iam really sad to see that they don't care about their fans . i didnt read all pages but i read reddit and matt farah from drive saide::

they have 1.4 million fans. they only need 2% to pay. they don't care about the rest because with 2% they can make money and be happy
he also said that if you cannot pay $4 your life is bad and you should do something else than watch videos

i wanted to pay but it doesnt work in my country and after reading the comments i dont want to pay anymore

I watched the video from piratebay because drive said it is ok to download and it is not that good as the rest..... i was a BIG fan (CHRIS HARRIS!) but now i wish drive fails and they stop making videos and all become poor

It doesn't matter what the price is. If it was $2 people would bh. In the grand scheme of charging, there is virtually no difference between $2 and $4 per month. Anyone who is willing to pay $2 would also pay $4. And if you're really that hurt that you can't afford it, you have major problems in your life that go way beyond internet videos.

that's fine, we only need 2% of our 1.4M subscribers to sign up for + in order to keep the lights on. So while, mentally, it sucks, financially, we can alienate 98% of our audience and continue to produce videos for the small percentage who will appreciate it. That may sound cold, but we're in survival mode and the alternative is not making videos at all.

Are those comments for real?

If so, any company that treats their potential customers with such contempt deserve to fail.

Really? I think they're just stating the facts and perhaps getting fed up that everyone thinks they're doing it to get rich when the aim is to actually not run at a loss.

I have been looking through the youtube comments on /Drive, but I am unable to find these alleged comments. Is it possible that something on the internet has been fabricated to suit an agenda?

I am willing to be corrected with the actual link.

Saying if your customers can't to don't want to pay the subscription fee they have problems in their life is pretty poor form, also saying download it i don't care i still get paid is just plain childish.

I could imagine reading those comments in one of CH's posts.

Interesting take on YT stopping the /Drive funding. I hadn't considered that it was because YT deemed it a failure. Obvious, really, when you think about it.

I looked for them in my underpants and they were not there either.

However when I looked on reddit as per the links provided they were quite easy to see. hehe

I'm still not sure about subscribing.

If you take EVO you get a magazine with some free videos. and with DRIVE I feel that for what they are asking I'm not getting a bargain. Yes in the scheme of things it might look like it's a few pints.

BUT it all adds up, and boy does it add up! And here is a list of some of the subscriptions I have, Virgin, Netflix, LoveFilms , Spotify, EVO, FT, etc… and that's the problem it's another few quid to the monthly expenses. So have to give up something to get DRIVE and in that context I'm not too sure what I should give up.

Yes I do love the reviews and videos but I think DRIVE should offer something else than just a 10-20 mins video with some behind the scene stuff. I don't really have any answers here and it is a brave new world in the You Tube world and Google really want to be the next broadcasters but till they get rid of the license fee something might happen but if you look at ITV they are doing just fine. But that is another debate about the future of TV.

Good luck to DRIVE + they have been brave as well a open to discussion with their audience.
