If you want to drift do an experience day or play at driftland in fife. Also drifting is very hard on the car compared to trackdays.

Fun little video, and amazing the E39 one was sooo long ago!

I'd say one thing worth noting that perhaps was not fully covered is the importance of "the bung".

Most modern rwd cars are set up to understeer even with significant throttle opening when loaded in a corner. So, and especially in the dry, tend to need a little sharp handwheel input and possible lift of the throttle to "get the front in sharply to help unseat the rear". This also avoids that nasty unexpected gross understeer event when you find the car hasn't got enough torque (or a decent enough diff) to cleanly slide the rear.

In fact, you sub consciously do "the bung" and you can see it in your video, but i suspect most people will start to try to drift from too high a lateral loading, making the resulting break away sharp and sudden (and as a result, difficult to catch).

Driving much slower, and using "the bung" makes it much easier for a beginner to learn to catch and stabilse the drift ;-)
I was thinking exactly the same thing watching the video, although I always think of it as 'The Send'!

Does anyone know why I can no longer make the vids fullscreen when watching via PH website?

Obviously I just go to youtube link but wondered if I am missing something?

Cheers

Excellent Video.

If there's one thing I would add, it's the clutch-kick technique to initialize the drift for cars with not as much torque as these modern day performance cars.

So essentially drop the clutch, big revs and then sudden release to break traction.

Very useful at low speeds too and how I get my RX8 sideways wink
I find the clutch kick very useful to keep a drift going when you have lost too much speed (in essence made a mistake) and you can get the rear moving again using this technique and it brings the revs back up again also.

love drifting got another full day booked in with learn2drift on the 7th August best fun in a car ever!

I assume the redline steering wheel is an option (seen about 4 mins in) for the 2er but no sign of it on the BMW UK site.

Imagine its not cheap though.

Really enjoyed this video and would love to have a go at drifting smile

Tiff Needell / Chris Harris have always made it look so easy, when it obviously is not easy! They do say practise makes perfect.

Very informative.

Cheers

Just had a look at their website

After an in-car demonstration from your instructor, you take the wheel yourself for the drift entry. Getting the right amount of angle, controlling the weight shift through the car and nailing the speed is essential - and you'll have 4 attempts to master this skill. £169
4 attempts???
£169??????

Priced about the same as track day experience, where you get 3 laps.

What us better value is the days where you bring your own car get to practice in a safe environment and plus there are always experienced guys around willing to give you free advice. You get the same thing at crail drift days but the track is less forgiving.

Perhaps, but it is still terrible value if you want to learn to drift.

About 10 years ago, I spent circa £300 for a full days coaching with Don Palmer. Admittedly it was my own car, but you can sign up in the knowledge that you'll actually have some decent skills and understanding at the end of the day. At 4 attempts in an unfamiliar car, the driftland thing is just an expensive fairground ride.

A bit like Tandem skydiving -vs- AFF. Sure you'll get a taste for it, but you won't have learnt much, if anything at all.

This video is worth it for the seating position lesson alone - all the bellends you see driving around with one arm stretched straight out and resting on top of the wheel NEED to watch this...

Anyone that wants to learn drifting should try the Caterham Drift Experience. I did it last year and had a hoot!

Yes, years and years ago I was told how to setup the seating position just as Chris did and have always done that in every car since. Its amazing the people who end up driving like grasshoppers, etc. by being too close or too far away.

If you want a nice intro with something thats lets the back out at the drop of a hat try this:

http://westfield-sportscars.co.uk/westfield-active...

I have been on a couple of the westfield experience days and they have been great fun. Instructors were always very calm, clear and genuinely happy when you nailed it.

At risk of coming across as 'Mr Negative', I thought it was terrible;

When I did it (8 years ago?) it was advertised as being held at Silverstone. Great I thought.

When I get there, I found it was actually being held in an uneven car park as you enter Silverstone. The gradients made it quite hard to hone your skills as one minute its positive camber, the next its negative, so there was no consistency and an additional challenge for a novice to have to deal with. You're only in the car for a couple of runs before you have to hand it over to the next person, just as its starting to click.
I, personally, found the Caterhams great handling cars but actually very difficult to drift. (and it didn't help the ego that Mr Harris himself was there making it look SO easy, as did the Caterham promo/admin girl irked ( smile ) ). It was also quite a hot day and the tyres were very grippy, making the attaining of oversteer really quite difficult.

It was fun, but as school for learning/developing drift skills, it really wasn't very good.

Oulton Park has a drift circuit on the infield. Been there a few times with the camera, not been for a while though.

Take your own car
