The Motoring News forum ( top section of threads) is dying. I just checked and the activity in the last week is minimal.
I would have thought that the editors would have kept it current with fresh news.
Kinda odd for a motoring site.

I look at it a bit like LeMans which I love and will go to religiously...

Avoid the knobs that want to spray wee on you on Friday, learn where the idiots hang out and avoid them, find the great spectating spots and only talk to the people that act/comment/behave like you want to.

I personally never read the programme and similarly never read the adverts or articles (bar Mr Harris) on here either...

If you're running an ad model then you have to appeal to the majority. That is why there are so many tremendously exciting articles about small, mass produced diesels. At the same time, as as revenue isn't the most brilliant revenue stream for a business you are incentivised to do liver a little more filler than otherwise, such as pointless press releases.

It is a very tough gig to run a site like this and keep eyeballs up while also generating enough revenue to keep the website up.

Personally, I do think PH has moved a little lower brow. But some of the forums that I am interested in are quite thinly populated these days. Take the Land Rover sub forum, there isn't enough in there to keep you in.

One aspect to look at is to look to expand certain sub forums to add greater depth to the site. I would so this by creating a well structured package that will tempt owners of excellent specialist forums to bring their content and uses onto PH in exchange for the stability of PH and a firmer income stream.

I.e the up and coming or arrived PetrolTeds out there. Their specialist forum merges into the PH machine. They can still publish this into a third party site like that Porsche site does with the PH Porsche forum etc and that will be important for driving tailored traffic. The website owner gets less IT hassle and firmer revenues, PH gets more eyeballs and far more selective content for premium advertising and we all get a vast increase in very high quality content.

I get the impression it's become a general blokes forum rather than just for petrolheads. Some of the really interesting car pieces get so little response on the forums yet when someone cuts up a cyclist WW3 breaks out.

I was doing OK till the last one, surely it should be do you own a dashcam which you've used to post a video on YouTube with a whiney bhy post about someone who pulled out in front of you
the problem is the dash cam boys are turning into the stupid cycle 'policemen'.

Aninoid voice mode; 'WE43 JUI has just gone 5mm over white line, i am reporting you to youtube', and then post it to youtube so all the other nerds can mutually masturbate each other off, among other gems such as a police car doing 5mph over the limit, all caught on the 'cam'

The 'top gear' effect.

I first noticed this at work, if you watched the old format top gear then you were some kind of car gay. Then when it changed to it's new format, all the morons at work started watching it but didn't care for the cars.

Extra gay points seem to be awarded if you go to the gym and don't take interest in football.

It would be very easy to fix, you just need a basic attitude test

Do you own a dash cam - BANNED
What's wrong with liking these? I wouldn't make that statement in the Classics section or you'll be lynched.
Because he's a opinionated tt who believes that everyone should share his opinion that Vauxhall have never made a good car. I can't remember any thread where he hasn't trotted out the same st.

I don't like any modern Vauxhall cars - I don't like many of the old ones much either but it even irritates me.

It's a s tedious as MX5, Mapped 335d, chucking a can of Red bull, Back doors and sausages in the lawn etc etc

Any Forum I have ever been on there have always been threads like this with plenty willing to jump on the bandwagon and agree. I was on the TT Forum and had over 15,000 posts - I did end up getting bored seeing the same old stuff over and over again and left a few years ago.

I find that there is so much more to offer on PH, so many tailored sub-forums, lots of characters and plenty of idiots whose stupid posts bring a smile to my face on a daily basis.

It is the best forum I have been on by far and the variety keeps it fresh for me.
I was the same actually, I was on the 106 owners club forum for years. But as the cars got older and cheaper, It ended up going from enthusiasts to more and more people that just joined up to find out how to repair there car on the cheap. And it was the same questions over and over again. It was a great club in its day though.

On another note from above, I quite like 2cv's.......

Hey everyone,

Just thought I'd jump in here and put PH's point of view across. Everyone is of course absolutely entitled to an opinion and people will always come and go as they please. However, there are some things that are worth keeping in mind throughout all of this...

Firstly it's worth noting that whilst PistonHeads is a business and as such has all of the associated targets and requirements that go hand in hand with any commercial entity, behind the scenes there is a passionate and enthusiastic team running the show. We genuinely care about it and put a huge amount of time, effort and emotion into it.

Secondly, some of the criticism has been aimed at the website's look, feel and functionality. Well, the good news is that there are significant changes on the horizon that will address all of these points. The flip side is that I'm sure some people will have a different view and see the developments as a bad thing, so great care is being taken to be sympathetic to the expectations of these existing users whilst still bringing the site bang up to date. Just looking at the recent introduction of the new style header as an example should show how passionately it was discussed as it generated some extremely strong opinions. However, the "click here to revert to the old header" button that was included was used by less than 1% of visitors - perhaps this is an indication that sometimes people just have a knee-jerk reaction to change, but then get used to it and see the value and improvement over time.

Lastly, we're working tirelessly to come up with new and innovative ways to add value to the community and to make PH an even better place. These will take the form of new products, new events and new opportunities for all PHers to get involved in. We'll also be introducing some ways to harness and utilise the opinions, knowledge and passion of the community.

I know that it would be easy to take a cynical view on this post and simply say "yeah, but that's all just words isn't it"... and I agree. And I'm sure some will. So all I can ask is for you to give us the benefit of the doubt, sit back, stay positive and keep enjoying PistonHeads safe in the knowledge that it is in safe hands. Meanwhile, we're going to be beavering away, doing everything in our power to prove that this isn't just words.

I take all that on board. But why do you close threads and ban members so readily nowadays ?

As the user base has grown and become more mainstream, inevitably the signal to noise ratio has declined.

IMO we need the introducton of filtering tools such as ignore user or even a reddit-style upvote/downvote mechanism.

I'm on record some time ago calling against such changes as they go against PH's free-wheeling ethos, but we're at the point now where the benefits outweigh the drawbacks.

I'd love an ignore/block user feature, that works like the block function on FaceBook yes

Am I allowed to say I think that PH is great.

The thing is - the things that make it great - diversity of people, cars and threads is what can lead to the downsides.

But theres not a lot you can do about that - except go with the flow.

How many forums can you go on - read about a 1987 Saab 900 with a retrofitted T16 - move to another section and hear about some chaps new to him caravan.

Theres such a diversity of threads - and while some comments/some people on here may not be your cup of tea - including me because im not even my own cup of tea biggrin - its that diversity that makes coming on here fun.

All imo

Can we have a special subscribers option, where we pay to be a member, but lose the ads that slow the thing up,piss me off and may eventually stop me logging in?. This way we can see who has subscribed and who is just a casual user. This way, the real enthusiasts will subscribe and the others drift in and out. I pay for other sites I frequent, and they are all the better for it as those posting have an (albeit small) investment in the whole thing and it tends to keep the pillocks at bay.

I personally think that it's great.

Just like life, there are some annoying elements, but I think the blend is about right.
