Can we have a special subscribers option, where we pay to be a member, but lose the ads that slow the thing up,piss me off and may eventually stop me logging in?. This way we can see who has subscribed and who is just a casual user. This way, the real enthusiasts will subscribe and the others drift in and out. I pay for other sites I frequent, and they are all the better for it as those posting have an (albeit small) investment in the whole thing and it tends to keep the pillocks at bay.
You may be on to something with that. Clivey said:

You may be on to something with that. How much does the advertising raise per user? Charge a small annual subscription to get rid of the ads! I'd be up for that!

I guess that means new(er) members subscriptions could offset the PPP for those of us still lucky enough to be on the older (higher) rates.Debaser said:

Thanks for the feedback everyone - as I say we'll work towards setting up a way for the community to channel their feedback and suggestions so we can start to work through the list of suggestions.

Don't re-engineer PH too much as one of the great enjoyments is complaining about PH.JD
If you take away the source of our complains, we'll complain that we have nothing to complain about.
I'm glad I made that clear.
Thank-you for listening.

astic team running the show. We genuinely care about it and put a huge amount of time, effort and emotion into it.
Secondly, some of the criticism has been aimed at the website's look, feel and functionality. Well, the good news is that there are significant changes on the horizon that will address all of these points.

It does seem like a good option but can you imagine the total choppers who will start posting about how their opinion is more valuable as they pay for the service and this makes them superior to the hoi poloi who can't afford it? It's such a deep seated British trait that for it to work you'd have to have another option on top that cost more but still delivered ads, ie as is but you are so rich and succesful that you just pay for the fun of it and look down on those who pay the paupers fee to get rid of ads.
Urgh. You've just reminded me of the airline thread...mccrackenj said:
This is one of the reasons I come here and ignore almost all other fora
Indeed, the nice simple interface (once the ads have been weeded out) is great. I really don't want a state-of-the art all singing all dancing pretty front end. Just simple and quick.PH is about people, principally. It has its share of half-wits, bigots and dunderheads, but also enough witty and smart people to keep people entertained, particularly in the more specialised sections.
Monetise the classifieds, for sure, that has to compete with autotrader and the like so its a purely business decision.

Is a hedge hog like a ditch finder?
I fail on the last two in that list. I like Rovers and have a very good dashcam. Recorded a BM who hogged a hedge and found a steep sided ditch too.
I try not to run over Hedgehogs though. The ones nosily copulating on my lawn nights pay no rent! Sexual freeloaders.

I'd love an ignore/block user feature, that works like the block function on FaceBook
That would be excellent, can it be done in a way that the person knows someone has blocked them, they don't need to know who has blocked them but if it were possible those who post reams of utter ste and bks may discover people really don't want to read it and they may just disappear back into the sewer they came from. Also please no more advertising popping up, really distracting
The only thing that has pushed me away from here is that the moderation on the forums is now insane. I joined up here because the forums were busy and there were many amusing threads to entertain, I could start off giggling at something in the lounge and three hours later having to tear myself away from the computer for some dinner after browsing through the classifieds because I read one of the PH articles from a link in another thread somewhere. Everything seemed to link together, I would navigate through most of the site every time that I logged on. In fact I browsed the site for a very long time before I signed up as there was so much to read on here that I didn't even feel the need to contribute, there was always something else that I felt the need to read before I wanted to type something.
Recently it feels like moderators are trying to justify their existence, as if they weren't deleting/moving stuff they would be sacked. Have you started paying them?
There are no longer any long amusing threads to get me hooked so I just browse a few specific threads that I'm interested in and then go find something else to do. It's become the norm to expect stuff to become moderated so no one bothers with any of it now, I was absolutely amazed that the crack shaving thread wasn't deleted from the lounge for being 'a waste of bandwidth' and its hardly risque. The site is being moderated to under 16 year old standard when I'm guessing that the majority of the members average 30 years old.
Definitely not a brilliant example but it's the most recent: There's a mass exodus in the Porsche sub forum at the moment because as I understand it someone was banned for posting a picture of their bum, so they're all sodding off to another forum. So that's a load of members that probably used to browse the whole site that will no longer bother and new members won't join because that forum will be quiet and the 911 forum will be busy. The whole forum has become like that, the sub forums have become smaller and have less traffic so people are logging on elsewhere and staying there rather than floating around all of PH.
Put a button at the start of the site saying that you have to be 16+ to be a member and drop the level of moderation. I can understand the name and shame rule but the rest of it makes a site that people don't want to bother with, if it didn't have the level of traffic that it did no one would bother with most of it. Banning people for posting photos with their signature on it because of advertising is another one, what do you think will happen because they have advertised themselves on one of their photos?
I came here because it was amusing, I bought a TVR because the people here were helpful and enthusiastic, I stayed here because it was busy and there was a lot of content. The fun is being moderated out, the people are leaving for other forums and because of that the content is dwindling.

I've got a spare 2c...
I think the general mix of car-related to non car-related is about right, but it does feel that there has been some sort of sub-forum explosion recently. Perhaps one for each make of car would make sense on a site such as PH, but do we really need the hairs split in the way they are? And are there plans for more sub forums for each hobby? Stamp collecting, bird watching and glass blowing next???
There's still a lot here to keep me reading, but I wouldn't pay for it. And I agree about the lack of avatars and signatures - its simpler, and comes across as a bit more grown up.
It would be a shame if PH simply became a broad, newspaper-type website, covering all and every topic out there, without keeping a focus on the bit that probably brought many of us here in the first place - cars!
