Yeah fair points but I do feel that the private customer stiffing a dealer is only 'morally' wrong. Any dealer who claims to be a professional seller should have enough nouse to find any serious problems with the car when they appraise it.
As has been said - you dont get that opportunity. You get maybe a spin around the block at best. Once the car is in you do your detailed checking and confirm whether its retail quality or not. No customer is going to tolerate you doing a comprehensive in depth health check, up on ramps, plugged in to the computer, 30 minute test drive on their trade in. Just doesnt work that way.lord trumpton said:
In my experience they tend to have a quick look to check that its got four wheels and starts then then offer below book
Yup. For the above reasons.lord trumpton said:
Although dealers may get a rough deal sometimes then they have to accept its par for the course when dealing with the general public.
So its ok for the general public to try to stiff the dealer? Funny because on one hand theres a criticism that dealers dont think of the bigger picture with regard to long term relationship, but on the other hand it seems you think its ok to stiff the dealer, which hardly encourages that does it?lord trumpton said:
Generally speaking though most dealers can't lay straight in bed. Lying razzbags
Well, clearly you've been going to the wrong dealers.Edited by daemon on Friday 8th August 11:06

If my livelihood and reputation hinged on the cars I buy and sell then you can bet your arse I would be all over it. If a customer cannot accept a request for a test drive and a mechanic to give it a once over then they are not the customers I would want.
The real reason the salescocks don't do this is because all they are focussing on is the sale and commission.

Glad to see the usual PH approach of knowing fk all about how a job works yet simultaneously knowing how to do it much better is still alive and well.
Keep up the good work chaps.
Its car sales...even my 1yr old could work it out.Keep up the good work chaps.
It's not exactly rocket science is it?
Here's a quick guide to getting started
1 - Buy some pointy shoes and a cheap suit.
2 - Abandon any morals you may have cultured over the years
3 - Sell cars

Every time one of them said "There's someone else coming to look at it."
Sometimes it is true. I've actually had abuse of customers who phone on a Monday to see it is available and then turn up announced on a Thursday stunned someone else has bought it.You would prefer them to say "no one else will look at it - drive 200 miles on a whim in a month's time and it'll be here"?
Estate agent today. Place has been on the market for over a month and empty. Turned up and wasn't there so waited. She arrived and landlord had to tell here where he had hid the key. Then tried to get in through a bolted door. Ie the back door to the property.
Then when I expressed interest she said one other party is very interested and has viewed twice now.
REALLY!
Don't even get me started on the L322 range rover I bought last year.

Now for what its worth, We have just bought a car from a used car dealer.......And it was a good experience and got a very fair price. Like everything in life, there are good ones and Very bad ones

Having said that I think I've been lied to by every profession going in one way or another.
I do the technical part of the sales process for an it security vendor. Keeping certain things from the customer that would stop a deal at the earlier stage but probably wouldn't later down the line is common practice.
We his our weaknesses all the time and the sales people often tell porkies to get meetings with customers.

This is brilliant. I might print this and title it 'Selling cars 101' and hand it out to any new people when they join.

Just to square up the tally - I am as cynical as the next guy, but actually all three of the used cars I have bought from dealers have been excellent. Never had a problem with any of them.
I've never really had any issues when buying retail either - possibly the odd half truth that you can see through instantly but nothing serious.Makes you wonder what sort of establishment these people who have had problems time in and time out are going to shady outfits in the first place
Its like going into a really rough chinese carry out that operates out of a trailer van in a bad area of town, getting a dodgy takeaway and then declaring that all chinese restaurants are dodgy.
Maybe some people are doing their due diligence up front in terms of who they're buying off? If you want maximise you chances of getting absolutely the best car with an iron clad warranty then dont go to someone you've never heard of 200 miles away just because they're a few quid cheaper?
