£65k last year in fleet sales selling Renault and Nissan. Not earth shattering, but keeps the wolf from the door.

Remind me what you do again?
With respect i would have thought was in the top 20% of salaries and certainly wouldnt be an "average" car sales salary.

Typically - from people i know - Joe Average Salesman is maybe on a basic of £12K and grosses £25K - £30K per year.

I mainly buy privately partly because so many dealers nowadays offer you little aftersales support. So whats the +£1,500 for over a similar private car sale? A cup of coffee and a £15 valet it seems.

Nowadays the older the car 5yrs+ we are told if bought from a dealer any recourse is based on age and/or mileage. So why buy a used car from a dealer then? False sense of security?

Edit- In addition its gobsmacking the spiel car sales staff are spun to keep them on st commission and low wages. They are flogged/made to work hard for their money- on their feet all day and being fed the line that the secondhand car only has £100 in it. bks, really. On used cars I don't believe it.

Wrong way round Hora.
That's the bullst line used by salesmen to see if the punter is a white flager!

Olympic gold medal standard humblebragging there....
biggrin
well not really, someone asked and he provided
It was this bit that made me laugh. I've been in the motor trade a long time and £65k is exceptional.

They didnt ask him, they asked Hora, and also they asked for a typical wage, not some individuals specifics, which in this case isnt reflective of market rates.

Also, hes in fleet sales, not retail sales, so not really relevant at all to the question.

Came across as a bit cringeworthy TBH.

Owned five over the past decade. All Bone dry and so far never had a HG go. If and when it happens, I'll buy another or have some bloke whack in a new motor. It's not like it'll cost much. Fun little cars, far from perfect, but that's all part of the deal as far as I'm concerned.

If I wanted something better, I'd buy something better. I'm considering getting it supercharged by Turbo Technics or someone in the next few years. Utter madness? Possibly. An interesting and fun thing to keep me amused? Yes.

Lots of childish nastiness on here of late.

I had one a couple of years ago. X Power grey late model TF. Had an intermittent gearbox related problem so i didnt keep it long.

Saw plenty in the motor trade with HGF.

Drove quite well. No MX5 though.

Both an MX5 and MR2 do the same thing a lot better for very similar money.

Have had 3 MX5s and two MR2s.

Wouldnt like to have bought one new or nearly new.

Hora asked what wages can salespeople in the motor trade earn. I provided an answer of what I earned last year. I know retail sales people that earn the same selling 'prestige' brands. The top retail guy at Renault wasn't a million miles behind me. And that was off a lower basic as retail/fleet have different wage structures.

Even a poor salesperson in a volume brand should be doing late £20's unless they're in a very quiet dealership.

Anyway they had to pay me that much to compensate for a 1.5 diesel Scenic as a company car wink

daemon, I'm not in fleet sales, I would be disappointed if I didn't match FastBug this year. And we are a small independent site. With a salesman earning 20-25k, I would suggest he isn't a very good salesman, or the company he works for are very crafty sods taking full advantage.

Specifically he asked "So what do you class as a decent wage (and commission) for a car salesman for any of the main/every day brands?"

Thats quite different from "what wages can salespeople in the motor trade earn"

Either question didnt require a specific answer.

Fair play BTW. Thats strong money, but i'd say you're in the top quartile at least with that, rather than it being an "average" salary. Top people / top salaries in any field are usually high and cant be treated as typical.

Also remembered the top used guy was shifting about 250 odd units and earned £60k. He was very good though!

Interesting.

Tops out at around £30K around me. I know because a friend of mine was looking back in to retail sales from being self employed and he'd talked to Toyota, Renault, Vauxhall and Subaru and they were all talking in that ballpark.

Clearly a regional thing

Either regional, or teaming together to keep their wage percentages low. Give you an idea, I sold a VW T5 yesterday that netted me £286, and a Merc 1522 that I took £381 from. So on top of my basic, I earnt £667 alone yesterday before tax etc. Yes thats a very strong day, and it doesn't happen everyday, but I average between 35-50 a month, and generally make £100 minimum on a vehicle. And then you have finance commissions on top of that. Its not hard, it you negotiate a good salary, and are a good salesman.

Owned one, had problems, sold it.

Also, sold them new "back in the day" and saw plenty in the trade when i was motor trading.

Also the two other people commenting, sold them new?

Agreed, 65k is strong money. Although its been a few years since I left sales, I've sold cars, vans and motorhomes and there wasn't a single person making that kind of money in any of the dealerships I worked in. Yes there was people earning more but its easy to see what people earn roughly and it wasn't 65k. Clearly working in the SE area doesn't pay as well as some areas then!

Even when selling 90k of motorhome with extras wouldn't see that kind of money unless you were selling an actual metric tonne of the damn things smile

So that would be a third or half of a motorhome, then?

Sold a TF 160 and replaced with a new MX-5. The Mazda was a much much better car. It didn't gel with me for want of a better term. I sold it. Went looking for MGFs say behind the wheel if one and it just suited me. Like an old pair of trainers ior a toy you had when you were a kid.

I'm not referring to you here but other posters with childish your car is crap lines. The thread is about being lied to by salesmen. Just a lot of silly little boys posting nasty comments because they can. I personally dislike Ford Pumas. Some people love them. If a guy was posting here about being lied to while buying a Puma, I'd not respond with some snide comment about it being a rusty tarted up Fuesta with a council house badge. If the thread was 'Do you like the Puma?' Maybe I would.

I never suggested the MGF is crap, although can't really argue otherwise, they weren't a high point.

I was merely laughing that your wife was so wise about cars as to choose one and then give the salesman the coffee beans.
