Not a lie that affected me but one that did make me wonder about the guy. I saw a Boxster the other week and when I checked the engine oil I commented on how it was spotless and had probably just been serviced.

When the seller came round from the front of the car to have a look (bearing in mind the dipstick is now back in, oil cap etc. back on) he seemed to look down around the oil filler cap as if visually checking the level from the side and agree with me on the colour of the oil. Either I'm being ignorant or he can see through solid objects.

Seemed strange considering he seemed a bit of a petrol head and had a 996 911.
Google rear main seal - he's probably used to checking the oil colour by looking on his drive smile

Back in the 1990's I bought an E-Type Jag from a dealer. The car looked great, ran well etc.. Paid fair money for it, happy with the deal.

12 months later it went for an MOT. Failed. Seemed that the owner before the dealer had bodged the restoration and welded a false floor over the rot, undersealed the car to disguise it and sold it to the dealer. I'd looked at the car with a mechanic, the dealer had looked at it, none of us spotted it. Now the rot had started to come through. Estimate for repair was 8k.

I called the robbing bd up and vented my spleen. You know what the reptile did? He only apologised and offered me a full refund. What a bd!. Car dealers, you can't trust 'em.

Me, "it wanders all over the road"

Dealer "all small cars do that sir"
Oddly enough thats completely accurate for all series Land Rovers even when they have completely new suspension!

When I was test driving my current car I mentioned to the wife (sat in the back) "shame it doesn't have heated seats" the sales guy piped up "Oh, that's a dealer fit option Sir, it's only around £300 to have it retro fitted". I gave it a 90% chance of being total bullst, but I let it slide.

Sure enough, to heat the seats in my car it would be easier to just run it down the production line again than retro fit them...
That's ok. I'll give it 90% that you're a total spacktard. But i'll let it slide...

They're only heated mats under he cloth/leather FFS. Not exactly rocket science to retrofit.

Blimey - so people selling things use sales tactics. You'll be telling me that all those offers in Tescos are not true next.

What sort of planet to people live on where they don't expect to be sold things? Do they never go out their front door? To a supermarket? Watched a TV ad?

You expect someone to say "it's been sitting here ages. It is a bit st to be honest. Can't shift it for love not money".

Anyway, maybe someone else is coming to look at it - they just haven't phoned the seller yet and told them they're coming. smile

Before I worked in the used car game I worked in IT - mainly on large projects for oil companies.

I can tell you the professional standards, skills, honesty, dedication to work, delivery on time, delivery of working things, payments etc. and the generally nice nature of the people in the used car industry and the motor trade in general is 100x that of the IT industry. And I worked in an area where a cock-up would have chucked 100,000 barrels of crude into the sea so heaven knows what it is like when you've got people writing a stock control system no one gives a st about.

The bd!

Hope you reported him to someone.

The fact that he didn't sacrifice his first born and at least give you a shot of his wife is just not acceptable.

Hope you tell everyone you know about this terrible service.

I'd name and shame him and never go back there.

I called a dealer when his ad said "It has had the import Haldex service done"

I asked if he was sure "Yes it has definitely had the Haldex serviced, I have the paperwork confirming it"

I then asked how that was possible as the Passat 4Motion uses the Audi Quattro system and there is no Haldex.

Cue much stuttering

I went into a dealer to buy the mrs a new (to her) car and wanted to part-ex a vehicle but the dealer didn't know I wanted to part-ex at that point. Found the car I liked and asked if it had been in accident at all, "no we don't ever sell repaired cars, all of our cars are HPI clear". Said I would take the car and took him to see the mrs' peugeot 206 that had been in a slow rear end shunt with a bent front wing and cracked front grille. He offered me a good price and I thought based on what he said he would auction it. Fast forward a month later it's on his site for sale at a large amount more than what he paid me for it. I have no problem with the fact he repaired it and was asking a lot more as in the condition it was in after being fixed it would be worth that much. It just made me laugh that he said he didn't sell repaired cars.
HPI clear does not mean it has not been in an accident. I think you mis-understood him.

I hit him. What else could I do? I said "don't you come round here being all reasonable and offering refunds".

As he went down he had the audacity to apologise for any damage to my fist. Smooth talking bd. Left me with no option but to stick the boot right in.

Unfortunately, I've never not been lied to (when buying) by a car salesman. Maybe that's one reason I tend to keep my cars longer than most. - I would honestly pay extra for the privilege of not getting messed about!

Me on phone to Audi bloke; 'Has it got Xenons?' Bloke says, 'Absolutely;' then I'll be down this arvo says I. When I get there and eyeball the car it clearly doesn't have bloody Xenons and when I point this out to the car bloke he waffles on about super bright bulbs FFS. I still bought the car anyway but what a tt, why bother telling fat porkies? I wouldn't have minded so much if he'd just apologised and said he'd made a mistake, everyone does, but the ste that he came out with was just embarrassing.

I had a right one last month.

He knew I knew what I was talking about so he let me put the car up on a ramp and really give it a good going over, before repairing every little thing that I pointed out and then giving me a discount for the wait I had whilst it was repaired. Never using him again that's for sure!

They love it when you take control and stiff em. I had a salesmen over the barrel when he made a mistake. I managed to get Supagard out of him for £450, GAP for £650 and a cost price (£1432) 3 month extended warranty. That'll show em.

Unfortunately, you proved to him that it doesn't matter if they lie, as you bought the car.
