In the last two days I have seen two GTD's being driven by young guys with the driver's seat right back, hand on 12 o'clock on the steering wheel and rear tints.

It's quite clear where the image of the Golf GTD is going.

Oh dear.
Golf's have been there for a long time already.

The "gangsta lean" seating position isn't though.

Golf GTD may start to have an image problem if not careful hehe
Haha, and what do you suppose Mr GTD does about it?

All I see is that it's proof that VW are making a desirable car. The same that has happened with most Audis, most BMWs, most Mercedes.

I'm 35 and have a 5 and 2-year-old, so I'm trying my best to out these people off, but regardless of who drives them, I'm not about to change it for something like a Jag XF.

What desirable cars aren't "there" though?

He's regurgitating that bizarre myth that diesel cars are useless for anyone who does less than 10k miles a year.

£3625 per year!
For that sort of money, you could buy one of these every year and just set fire to it after 12 months and still be better off:

Plus, you wouldn't have to drive a diesel.

I would save myself another 2.5k and buy ones of these not to drive a golf

This place is getting worse people going giddy eyes over a fking golf and a diesel golf at that.

You'd only have to drive that for two and a half months and then you could set fire it. And with that paint job, two and a half months is about all i could take!

That's assuming those 10000 miles are made up of small journeys. Again, a baseless generalisation.

Most weeks as im a mechanic still don't get the big deal about them. Bland bland bland and more bland with just a hint of more bland to follow up with it.

Its just a box with 4 wheels and a diesel engine like a lot of similar cars.

This is true. If you do 100 journeys of 100 miles it'll be fine in terms of DPF getting a good use.

However, given the diesel is more expensive per litre. And the Diesel costs more to buy in the first place. (Gtd vs the equivalent same 150bhp Petrol) Someone more interested than me will be able to tell, sorry PROVE, that it would be more cost efficient to just buy a petrol anyway. laugh

http://www.which.co.uk/cars/driving/driver-tools/p...

http://www.volkswagen.co.uk/new/golf-vii/which-mod...

GTD vs 1.4 TFSI Petrol (both 150bhp so as fair as you'll get) Both 5 door, DSG albeit Petrol is 7 speed.

Rough figures of 130p/150p petrol vs diesel. 30mpg against 45. (forget the nonsense 65mpg. We'll guess at real world) Means you have to do 18months to recoup the costs. If the OP can live with that fine. I dunno how the price changes when you rent one like he is.

Am I missing something? 10K miles a year is less than my 91 year old grandfather does, £7250 to rent a car for 2 years to cover the sort of distance one might expect to do annually walking a medium sized dog seems insane to me.

Pfff. I agree that £250pm is good for a brand new GTD, and that it's a very accomplished car, but last month I saw the Golf R offered for £200pm, 6+23, 8kpa. Including VAT.

I'm a die-hard shedder who firmly believes in buying cars cheap enough that it's impossible to lose money, but a new 300bhp hatch for two hundred quid a month? That did get me doing some sums, I have to admit..

Respectfully, that's a load of nonsense. For a start the GTD has 181bhp, not 150bhp. It is comparable to the GTI, and is £600 less to purchase, not more. And when was the last time you looked at the cost difference, because for the last 6 months where I live it has been around 2p/l more. At the moment is it 4p/l more. That makes a difference of £2 on a tank of fuel (50L tank). Seriously, do a bit of ground work before wasting your time posting meaning less babble.
