Even if I was worth £1000000000000000000000000000 billion pounds I wouldn't pay that for something like that.

Seems to be a number on Ebay for not a lot of money. I think I could cope with a pre-used one.

It's probably the plastic screen surround lifting in the wind making the drone.

Has it had screen replaced?

Well I've just checked the tailgate of my RR and there is - on the right side only - the very beginnings of some rust. It's nothing like as bad as Chris Harris' RR in the photo at the beginning of this thread, but it's definitely there.

There's no way I'd have noticed it without looking very closely though, so if people are struggling with dealers when it's much worse, then I'm going to get laughed at if I show them mine, I'd imagine.
I've attached a picture (sorry - I don't know why it's upside down!) of where the rust is starting to appear on my RR. Does anyone have a view as to whether this is worth approaching the dealer about?

Hi EdJ,

It's worse than mine, but mine runs pretty much the entire width of the tailgate.

Although you're outside the warranty period, I reckon it's worth popping into your local dealer when you get 10 mins (especially if you're in the mood for an argument). If you don't ask, you don't get and your dealer might be packed full of decent people who are willing to help and maybe offer a goodwill gesture.

Bwah ha ha ha!!! What was in that tea I just drank?

Once mine is done, I'm going to spray waxoyl inside the holes, both ways, to make sure any sitting moisture isn't sitting on metal. Judging by the amount of people suffering the same problem, it's clearly a weakspot on the RR's and isn't treated in the factory.

Just to counter the "all LR dealers are rubbish" comments here, Chipperfield Land Rover couldn't have been more helpful, even when I went in with my tatty 160k Disco 3 and got some warranty work sorted which should have been done when the vehicle was about two years old. All got sorted with one phone call plus a visit to assess, then a day while the work was done.

Don't know about rust - the Disco simply didn't have any.

What an oasis, thank you.

Good to hear about the lack of rust too - that's what LR keep telling me about my RR!! laugh

Thanks - yes, I think you're right. I did wonder at the weekend whether I should think about swapping it for a new(er) one but came to my senses when I looked at the prices. Would be nice if they had updated the sat nav by now as well.

UPDATE:

The Land Rover bodyshop assessor (wearing a Ford embossed shirt...) has been and gone. He gave me a courtesy call before arriving, was bang on time, friendly, polite, cheerful and delighted to help.

He started off by saying this tailgate rust issue was rare and that he hadn't seen any LR cars with rust issues in the last 18 months. He did seem genuine but that was still hard to believe given the number of faulty tailgates mentioned in this thread alone - anyway, benefit of the doubt and all that.

He took more photos and said he was confident of a "positive outcome". As we know, the 6 year paint warranty is an "anti-perferation" warranty which only covers rust when it has started from the inside and rusted out all the way to leave a hole through the panel. The assessor advised me that this is not true when the rust is along a seam (panel join) which is why he was sure they'd agree in this instance. He added that LR are usually pretty good with things like this and he wouldn't expect them to deny the claim.

He also said he'd be happy to see my friend's car whenever it's available (Mr Gravelle was called to a meeting in Town so couldn't be here today).

Hopefully I will have an answer by the end of the week, as advised. I'll let you all know accordingly.

Sounds encouraging FastRich. Any chance you could put up a picture of your tailgate? I'd be interested to compare it with what I've got going on mine...

The bodyshop called me on Friday to advise they'd not heard back from the LR warranty dept as yet. They also advised that the LR warranty dept had been rather busy recently and were working to around a week's turnaround.

Hopefully I'll have heard by around mid week.

I'll update you as progress is made/updates are given...

Thanks Rich for putting up the pictures and keeping us updated. Must say that your rust looks considerably worse than mine which is staggering given the age of your car. Will be interesting to hear LR's response.

Hi EdJ,

Of the few I've seen, they do seem to vary in severity and age doesn't really seem to play a part. Chris Harris's one look the worst so far. My friends one is a 2010 and it's not as bad as mine but still bad enough to raise a complaint.

My car came from Kings Lynn so relatively close to the seaside - I wonder if that's had a catalytic effect?? Possibly but even so....

Thanks Chris, I assume you've read my email, most appreciated.

My father, recently retired, decided to treat himself to a used RR. He previously had an XF which he loved, and my mother is on her second freelander, which again they're very pleased with.

The RR is a 2010 vogue and was picked up yesterday from hunters Norwich. Keen to show off his new toy my father picked me up from the station in the afternoon. First impressions were good, even at 4 years old they're a lovely place to sit. However on closer inspection it became clear pre delivery prep was fairly poor, we found: glitter, parking stub, £2.50, a chocolate wrapper and a pearl in the door pockets. Several scuff marks and dirt that should have been dealt with remain. The rear number plate has also been miss aligned.

Having read this thread I then checked the rear, sure enough the first signs of bubbling are apparent, admittedly you'd have been hard pushed to notice them if you hadn't read this thread. There also appears to be rust under the rubber strips thar surround the rear windscreen, they're also displaying signs of bubbling. These my father noticed without my prompting.

He bought the car with an extended two year warranty and is taking it back to address the issues early next week. I'll upload some pictures in due course and keep you posted.

As an aside It's interesting to see how the car had worn compared with my 2010 Mercedes e250 estate. Given its 4 years of service ferrying two kids around central London, mostly driven by my wife, it's in comparably better shape.

Hi all,

Apologies for not writing sooner.

Last Friday, late afternoon, I had a call from the LR bodyshop saying the work has been approved! woohoo The reason for the delay was that LR close down for 2 weeks over summer.

Anyway, they're making bookings for early October so it should all be sorted out before another wet, cold and salty winter.

Poocherama - the rubber strips on the rear window are a very common issue - virtually every facelifted RR has this problem. As the parts are trim parts, they're not included under warranty. They're £38+vat each. MY friend simply removed his and polished up the glass. As the non-facelift cars don't have these, we assume they are just part of the tidying process for the facelifts. They might have something to do with the reduced wind noise too, I don't know.

The bodyshop said they'd try to get me new strips under the warranty when it goes in for its new tailgate & re-spray and apparently LR haven't made negative comment so my contact at the bodyshop assumes they're going to stump up and replace them too - that would be fantastic!

Good news. Thanks for the info on the strips.
