The ZF works just as well as a double clutch. Instant up and down shifts.
I know this gearbox, I have it in my BMW, it works fine and very smooth.I was just talking about the double-clutch system you find in a Ferrari 458 Italia or the PDK in the new 991 GT3, that gives you much more thrill.

Can someone help me out with the gearbox though - it's been a while since I understood autos..
This is an 8 speed with a clutch and a torque converter right? I thought auto meant no clutch but torque converter, semi-auto has just clutch (as does DSG). What is this then?
Have a look at the source link from the article ZFThis is an 8 speed with a clutch and a torque converter right? I thought auto meant no clutch but torque converter, semi-auto has just clutch (as does DSG). What is this then?

Anyway, Vanquish/S (2001-2007) FOREVER.
Yes. Aston Martin have now twice used a name from a very special car and applied it to something merely very nice. First the Vantage, previously used on the hotter version of a car and then used on the base model, and more recently the Vanquish name applied to this, a heavily facelifted DBS. That said, this is a nice car, but it would be more appealing if it had a name that wasn't Vanquish. At Wilton House 2 years ago towards the end of the day the owner of an original Vanquish parked next to the new one on the Aston stand (grass). The old one looked more special by some margin.

This ZF gearbox is utterly awesome.

Its the in town manners that really improve the way cars like this drive. Are those dual clutch systems better mannered than some of the VAG offerings?I was just talking about the double-clutch system you find in a Ferrari 458 Italia or the PDK in the new 991 GT3, that gives you much more thrill.

Yes, this car didn't deserve the name "Vanquish". It remains a "tuned" DB9 2013, with more aero elements, engine power and refresh interior, but that's it.At Wilton House 2 years ago towards the end of the day the owner of an original Vanquish parked next to the new one on the Aston stand (grass). When it first came out in 2001, the original Vanquish was a complete new model. The Vanquish 2013 was just the continuation of the 2004 DB9...
I know this design has been around since the turn of the millennium but this car is still utterly stunning.
I'm not a fan of black cars generally, but it just looks awesome in the second photo.
+ it has a thumping great big N/A V12 with almost 600hp for when your not just sat looking at how gorgeous it is.

Completely different body, completely different interior, more powerful engine. Just because it has the family resemblance you can't say it's a tuned DB9 - that's akin to saying the S Class Merc is a tuned C Class. When it first came out in 2001, the original Vanquish was a complete new model. ........
In the article the writer says the dash mounted transmission buttons are 'infuriating'....why? I think they're simple to use.
That's lovely, but so it should be for £200k.
Does anyone know how much the list price of a DBS was when it was launched for comparison?
A good DBS can be had for £80k or so now, which would surely not suffer too much depreciation compared to a £200k car, and is probably as good a drive (or at least the same smile factor) as a Vanquish.

The originally Vanquish undoubtedly looked pretty, but by all accounts had a very poor and antiquated automatic transmission. Give me the new Vanquish any day.
Not an automatic gearbox with torque converter, but a real automated-manual with electro-hydraulic clutch, like the F1 Ferrari transmission.Works perfectly fine with the Vanquish S clutch... you get a real thrill as soon as you understand how to drive it.
