And presumably not something which one could choose not to do...

You could say that it is optional, but I'm doing what I think any decent person would do.

Flemke, this isn't on subject but do you own any cars from other brands? Or do you just own McLaren's tongue out

Hi.

Day-to-day life would be rather difficult if my only cars were McLarens.

I am not impressed when well-to-do people posting on internet forums list the cars that they own. They are lucky enough to have a bunch of money and have put some of it into cars. And...?
I don't want to be like those people, but I don't want to be impolite by dodging your question.
At various points on this thread, the names of some cars which I own have been mentioned. I think they were SLS Black Series, Carrera GT, LCC Rocket, and the one that I use most often - an Audi A2.

Not forgetting the impeccable taste which led to the ownership of some really rather special Hondas... wink

I think it was a perfectly reasonable question, which different people would answer in different ways. It's just something that I myself don't like to talk about.

Oh, yeah. We have talked about that here, haven't we?
I still believe that the NSX is one of the greatest pure road cars ever made.

Hi, Do you or any of your immediate family members have an instagram account?
I saw what looked to be your fleet publicized on an account recently...and some talks of taking ownership of certain cars in the near future.

I will inflict upon Flemke some actual car-related fun, whether he likes it or not, tomorrow. I can't say it's spontaneous as it's taken some time to find time and vaguely acceptable weather ... but it's game on. Not a McLaren ... but a solid 400bhp/ton, no ABS, no stability system, no roof.
Did you have a good day?

Caterham R400 - a total riot.
Yes - it was a good day. In fact we spent most of the morning at McL looking at Flemke's 675, pre-delivery.
As always there was much interesting stuff at MSO, include #040 looking very lovely.

I shall look into it, thanks, although I shall not necessarily report my findings on here. wink

Cheers.

In terms of fun per pound, or fun per £ for that matter, there is not much that can beat a Seven, and the R400 spec seems ideal.
There are one or two practical issues although, as owner of a Rocket, I am not really in a position to criticise.

I hear you are picking up the 675t very soon, do you think you will be constantly comparing it to the P1 when driving it?

No problem, I didn't expect you would be behind advertising your driving routes in the LT. It does look incredible though!

Probably. I have been saying since the day that I first heard about the 675LT that I thought it would be the car that I had hoped (in my more realistic hopes, if not in my idealistic ones) the P1 would be.
I expect that I shall soon be selling the P1, out of being disgusted with how McL have conducted themselves. If I were totally principled, I suppose I would sell the 675 as well, although I expect that I shall think it too good to part with.

Do you mind saying why you are disgusted with McL? I am sorry if I am asking you to repeat yourself, but I don't recall reading this. I don't read your thread exhaustively but only dip in from time to time.

I have a close family member who sings the praises of McL - (and who is very excited about his 675 LT which he has now been driving for about three days).

Hi.

I am disgusted because:

- They promised that there would be an absolute maximum of 375 P1s, and that there would be no evolution or subsequent version of the P1, because "the P1 already is the best car we know how to make."

Throughout the launch and marketing period, everyone from Ron on down emphasised that, although a road car, the P1 would excel around a circuit and would be the fastest and best production driver's car on a circuit.

- A few weeks after they had filled the order book (and deposit book) for the P1, they announced that they would be making the "track only" P1 GTR. The P1 GTR was going to be lighter and faster than the plain P1. As for its road-legality, it was so close to being road-legal straight from the factory that a private garage in Hampshire has for many months now been making the GTRs road-legal. The McLaren factory, of all people, are assisting that garage in that process.

- I believe that they have made IRO 50 P1 GTRs. Therefore not only have they gone from a P1 build-run of 375 to a build-run of 425, but the last 50 were "better" (in the eyes of many customers, and certainly better on a circuit) than the normal P1s were.

- They marketed the 675LT as being coupe only and a maximum of 500 units. Many McLaren people from CEO Mike Flewitt on down are on record about this: "only 500", "coupe only". This boundaries were repeated in private conversations with the company, at the MTC launch dinner, et al.
As you know, Waremark, the car is not inexpensive. Many people were willing to pay such a high price on the basis that, unlike with the 12C and 650S, with only 500 units of the 675LT in existence, there would be a chance for residuals to hold up.

- Within weeks of the order and deposit book filling for the 675LT, there were rumours afoot that McLaren were looking to do a 675LT spider version. The rumours became so credible that a number of McLaren dealers have been allowing people who had put down deposits for coupes to switch their deposits to spiders.
McLaren have yet to confirm that they will build a 675LT spider, but have admitted to the press that they are "considering it". There is rampant speculation that the spider will be announced in December, and that the number of units will be as many as 500, making the "675LT" build-run not 500, but 1,000. Should they do this, coupe residuals will be harmed - that is indisputable.

- To add insult to injury, McLaren Automotive's latest stunt has been to take something like 10 of the P1s that they used as prototypes, development cars or press cars (these would have been outside the normal series of P1 chassis numbers, and therefore not amongst the "375"), completely refurb those cars with all-new bodywork and anything else that was less than perfect, and sell them to customers as factory-built, normal P1s. Not even on the most basic, give-McLaren-the benefit-of-the-doubt level is this anything but an outright broken promise, and a spit in the eye of every original P1 buyer.

Have I answered your question, sir? wink
