So there I am, taking the other half to work this morning, and what comes in the opposite direction, a Red F1 !. According to the only info I can find, only 2 red ones were made, and one was Mario Andrettis, recently imported into the UK. (2014). This particular model, known as chassis 28, was originally given to U.S. racing driver Michael Andretti by McLaren. It is one of only two red McLaren F1s and it still has Andretti's signature on the back of the sun visor. Anyone know if it’s a PH’er ?
Where was this? I saw one heading out of London last weekend along the Highway towards the Limehouse Link - wonder if it was the same one?robinessex said:

I've seen it around Brentwood too. As others have said 7 GSMI've a question!
What's the deal with the clutch in the f1? I've read about its ceramic make up and you apparently can't slip the clutch with some throttle to get going? Evo seem to suggest you crawl on the clutch until fully engaged then hit the throttle? Is this true? Also wouldn't this mean you couldn't hit the throttle on downshifts?

Not sure what you read, but the clutch is "pure" carbon-fibre, not carbon-ceramic as in the Carrera GT.What's the deal with the clutch in the f1? The thing with a carbon clutch is similar to carbon brakes on racing cars: when the friction surfaces are cold, there is almost no friction. Once they get fairly hot, there is a lot of friction. The trick is managing the rate of change from cold to hot, low friction to high friction. If you slip the clutch, you overheat and damage the clutch plate surfaces, which is why usually the clutch on an F1 road car must be replaced every few thousand miles.
Engaging the clutch at the right rate, for the degree of engagement of the plates, getting the car in gear, the engine speed and the road speed for the gear, can make for a smooth shift or an ugly, awkward one.
Certainly you can, indeed you must, use the throttle on downshifts in order to balance the above variables. In that respect it is no different from any other car with a manual 'box.
A stunning clutch of McLarens. The F1 remains a wonderful piece of design and the P1 looks a rightful successor when positioned next to it in those shots.
As technically impressive as the LT and HS are I do feel that McLaren are over using that front end. It must be sooooooo dull for you to open the garage door and see it looking back at you three times!
