The gold adhesive foil is a common material in motor racing. Although it looks exotic, it is not extraordinarily expensive and is normally used for a purely functional purpose.
Agreed, but 30 years ago...?
A friend of mine who was a factory engineer on 962s in the '80s tells me that they used the gold foil then. It was especially necessary on the first series with single turbos, which generated heat up to about 1250ºC.

And yes, that is my car at MSO.

Does returning to standard, in as much as any F1 is "standard", mean it will soon be departing the Flemke residence? eek

It is looking absolutely magnificent at the moment. It has been on quite a journey since this photo was taken a few years back.

The F1 does not have turbos: is the gold really needed?

I would say yes is the answer, epoxy laminates cannot handle the radiant energy that inconel gives off at 800-900 degrees celcius, this shot gives some insight into the heat involved. Gold suits the design brief so well, that even though other materials could fulfill the task, there is nothing else as treasured.

Gordon Murray doesn't strike me as the sort of chap that would have added it frivolously 'for a bit of bling', though if you no doubt asked him you'd get the answer you're looking for.

+1 amazing shot showing how exhausts basically work

Chassis 029 up for "sealed auction" in Mid May

This was sold before in 2021 for $18.6M ($20.4M inc fees) with 240 miles on the clock. Cant find exact mileage today, but the phrase "barely above 240miles" suggests its just sat in a collection unused since then. Comes with all the luggage and watch as you'd expect.

I do wonder if the price will be much the same though. Can't see it appreciating significantly (certainly no more than 5% IMO) in 3 short years.

I find it such a shame that such a car has not been driven and enjoyed. 247 miles or whatever is most likely trips to get it serviced. What a travesty.

It's done 254.7 miles - so 7 miles in a couple of years. The new owner didn't even take it far enough to atleast enjoy the ownership once. Sad.

They are becoming a bit beyond the normal lottery win car now....could you really justify or even afford a £15-20m car on a lottery win, that one will need a good going over before it is used in anger - I suspect and you are not going to stay living in your normal house and continue your job and blow it all on an F1 in reality...so, even with £40m type win, could you actually truly "afford" to buy a Mac F1 now?

BTW....I 100% get your point, I too would buy the best that I could and then actually use the thing.

Never get out of bed for less than a decent euromillions win!

Think you could afford to buy one, but only as an asset - buying that and using it would be a mistake, better to buy one that’s been used and keep using it.

Now all I need is to win big. biggrin

Even if I won the Euromillions jackpot I wouldn't buy one. Simply because my abilities behind the wheel wouldn't be able to even scratch the surface of the F1's abilities.
