Even the PCI adapter cards that are easily found for desktop systems probably wouldn't help in that regard. I guess it could be done by offering a driver that would act as a go-between to intercept the IO port interaction and the physical hardware, so the diag software thinks it still has a physical port. Perhaps one of the virtual machines support this? I guess another issue may well be timing, in that newer machines simply run too fast, which may cause the software to not wait long enough for responses etc.
Yes indeed. You would have thought though that the thing to do would be to modify the software on the laptops, not change the code in the F1's. Maybe they don't have the source code for the laptop diagnostic system any more - surely they wouldn't have lost that! It would be good to hear that they are upgrading that awful (by todays standards) GSM modem thing.

Not sure if this is true. But I got told by a ex racing driver that you can display race numbers on your car. But if you hold a racing licence they must display black X over them when on the road. Ronin59 said:

I think a lot of sponsor stickers vanishing is financially motivated. I was at McLaren Technology Centre 2 days ago, and every old racing car on display (starting from approx 1970) still had its original livery, bar the tobacco stuff: Yardley, Reynolds Aluminium, Shell, Vodafone, Ueno Clinic, Goodyear, Michelin, Segafredo, et al.

In my opinion, and my knowledge is of course limited, the only places capable at least in theory of servicing all areas of a road-going F1 properly are MSO/Woking and Schaeffer BMW in Idstein, Germany, which has a fabulous technician who specialises in servicing F1s and has done so numerous times over the last 2 decades.
