I would imagine the issue is that the software is directly accessing the physical ports via their IO port addresses in a way that doesn't allow it to be routed via the driver required for USB adapters, which was very commonplace. Even the PCI adapter cards that are easily found for desktop systems probably wouldn't help in that regard. I guess it could be done by offering a driver that would act as a go-between to intercept the IO port interaction and the physical hardware, so the diag software thinks it still has a physical port. Perhaps one of the virtual machines support this? I guess another issue may well be timing, in that newer machines simply run too fast, which may cause the software to not wait long enough for responses etc.
Yes indeed. You would have thought though that the thing to do would be to modify the software on the laptops, not change the code in the F1's. Maybe they don't have the source code for the laptop diagnostic system any more - surely they wouldn't have lost that! It would be good to hear that they are upgrading that awful (by todays standards) GSM modem thing.

I understood that to be true in the UK too - though perhaps not enforced.
Not sure if this is true. But I got told by a ex racing driver that you can display race numbers on your car. But if you hold a racing licence they must display black X over them when on the road.
That is my understanding. If you don't have an MSA licence there is no issue, especially if they are just numbers.

WRT the livery's on the GTR's that are now roadworthy, I have heard that those livery's that are now not 'politically correct [IE LARK, Davidoff, Marlboro etc] will not be put back on by the factory - message in point that when Mclaren showed #04R for the first time in a long while, it was still in its LARK colours but with no main sponsor stickers - I guess the corporates don't want to go down that route, but the Indy's aren't as bothered.
I think a lot of sponsor stickers vanishing is financially motivated. The moment you stop paying mother McLaren your association with the company is quickly erased from history.
Er... scratchchin

I was at McLaren Technology Centre 2 days ago, and every old racing car on display (starting from approx 1970) still had its original livery, bar the tobacco stuff: Yardley, Reynolds Aluminium, Shell, Vodafone, Ueno Clinic, Goodyear, Michelin, Segafredo, et al.

Assuming it is not a constraint about some details might not be public info yet, could I ask what you thought of the car of the event per 2 days ago?

Not far from being what I had hoped the P1 would be.

That's a different question. Let's say that the car isn't one of my favourites for driving, at least in the UK.

From that picture it looks like James May and Bruno Senna discussing one of Bruno's Uncle's cars.

I was told this before I went but I have about 80 pictures from my time there, pretty much all on the boulevard though.

In my opinion, and my knowledge is of course limited, the only places capable at least in theory of servicing all areas of a road-going F1 properly are MSO/Woking and Schaeffer BMW in Idstein, Germany, which has a fabulous technician who specialises in servicing F1s and has done so numerous times over the last 2 decades.
I would think that a certain Petersfield based operation would do a pretty god job at servicing road going F1's no?

Reading between the lines and potentially making 4+4 = 3234663. biggrin

They're doing a uprated version of P1 aren't they. So lets start the rumours.

No electric gubbins, lightweight? tongue out

I'd guess that it's the new cheaper McLaren and its small and light and not filled with electricity and gimmicks.
