Nice house takes priority. Problem is that only approx 1% of houses in the whole of the UK are nice.

Seeing lots of Q5s, Q3s, Evoques, BMWs, Mercs etc in large car parks is not uncommon nor is it special. I hope people don't live hand to mouth so they can buy such boring and ultimately ordinary cars. The majority of cars sold these days are not special so don't waste all your money on them.

sigh. If you can't find something to like about more than 1% of the UK's housing stock (by value, volume or number I wonder), then you really are lacking in imagination. However, I suspect this is just another one of your tedious attempts to remind us all how jolly wealthy you are.

The problem where I live (at least in my eyes) is property taxes. In Texas, they average about 3% of the value of the property. I have a pretty nice 3 bed 3 bath house with a 2 car garage in a nice area. Nothing fancy. I pay around $7000/year in property taxes. A good friend of mine moved away from my neighborhood and bought a really nice new build about 2 years ago for $350k. His house is now being assessed at $500k and he's now paying around $12,000 / year in taxes.

By contrast, council taxes for my parents house in West London is really low.

I'd like to have a nicer house but I'd rather not give $1000/month to the local government for the privilege.

Personally I would never live in anything of less than 5000 Sq ft.

And I have never had to give up driving a fancy car either.

It shouldn't be about compromising - you should be able to have it all.
Admire your confidence. You're 20 (or 23? Can't recall from other threads) and have some lovely cars and own a nice big house (or more) from the sounds of it. Well done, quite an achievement on the assumption the financial resources are earned and not gifted (that's not a criticism if it was gifted). Life has a knack of dealing the odd bad hand over the years you know, keep an eye out for them so you can avoid them. Nothing more dangerous than believing it can't happen to you.
I am 19 actually...

Where does all of it end? Give up a decent car to get on the property ladder. Then give up a decent car to trade to a better area/bigger house.

Then maybe you want an extension or want to be closer to a city etc. So give up a nice car for that.

Soon you will be virtually retired having driven sheds. What's the point?

It's all a balance and we all have different priorities in life. The only certainty is we will all be dead at some point.

Is this guy still here?

If it's the chap I remember, he refuses to evidence any of this own achievements. If it's not, my apologies!

He is 'Mr 6 figs'. Only talks about how rich he is, how no one else can actually afford anything, how finance corrupts those less rich/clever than himself etc.

Don't think he knows or cares much about cars at all.

Ah yes I remember, it is the same guy.

He kept insisting he had a mclaren but didn't need to prove it as nobody else had a nice car to prove... so I offered to custard mine, which he conveniently ignored!

This must be a good 6-10 months ago.. so he hasn't changed much!

No, it's East Yorks. New'ish (yr2000 built) houses all look very similar.

Mainly because he still hasn't got a pot to piss in - Audemars has quickly become PH's Chief Trolling Officer. We should celebrate such a meteoric rise considering the competition he is up against.

When I was young, I lived at my parents house and had loads of fast / fun cars.

Now with a family and kids I have a very nice house and still have fast / fun cars.

Fast / fun cars don't have to be expensive.

It's a fine balance. I have a rule since I was young and foolish that my car should never be more than 15% of the value of my house.
.
Not from money at all (all hard grafted for.) started out in a council house at 17 (with kid). At time had a sub £3k civic.

Then at 19 purchased a £55k place and had a variety of cars I think the nicest / most expensive was a Honda S2000 circa £14k but by then house was worth £150k.

Then at around 27 moved into a £340k place and again various cars probably most expensive was a £38 evora.

Then at 36 move into a £650k place and drive a GT4 currently. Circa £80k new.

So I always try to have as nice a car as possible but no more than 10-15% of the value of the house and always make sure I've saved for the car and paid cash. If I can't do that I can't afford it is my motto.

With identical looking paving, gardens, layout of the houses in relation to each other? Even my sister thought it was our own street!

Asking someone to prove something they claim (after insulting anybody who owns any less) is not sleuthing. In fact it's quite the opposite by definition since I outright asked and did nothing further when he didnt engage rolleyes

I sold our 4 bed family cottage and downgraded to a 3 bed bungalow to release some equity so i can finally enjoy some nice car ownership...

The home has been the important thing but now at 49yrs with the kids grown up, mortgage free and semi-retired the search is on.
