E34 M5 for me.
I had a 2.5 for a while and it was a lovely thing that was sadly knackered by age and a lack of careful owners. It did feel better built than the other generations of BMW I've had since.

A box fresh M5 in the best shape they made would be amazing.

I think it also has a more usable performance envelope than the new ones.

My current daily (well one of two)....

I had it in storage for nearly 8 years before finally getting it back on the road last May. Put around 10k on it since then, a mixture of cross-country Mway and Aroad slogs and short trips to the train station, its been great. Must have been great to own when new. Although I have found that every bugger in a diesel hatch or an Insignia tries to race me.
Lovely and so rare now. frown
My wife swaps between a '88 Astra and a '90 Nova daily and hates driving newer stuff. I got a '91 Saab 900T16 and a GTE 16V and can only imagine how outrageous they must have seemed over 20 years ago!

I don't actually drive it every day, but it is my only car.

Good choice but I'd go for a 944 turbo SE, they are brilliant cars even at 100k miles so it would be amazing to have a 0 miles new example today, plenty capable to use as a daily driver.
Either would be awesome to be honest.

A 944 would get a little tedious as a shopping car/stop start in traffic/lengthy motorway use.

A 928 would do an absolutely superb job doing 30k miles a year as a commuting car, even today.

The E34 M5 would indeed make an excellent daily, the only slight issue being that they only really get into their stride above 100MPH and feel a bit bored when in traffic or just cruising along

Think I'd quite like one of these as a daily:

Being PH I doubt few would ever consider one of these. One or more were my DDs for over ten years. Still have a low mileage 1985 example.

Of everything available in 1990, you'd go with that?

Really?

Good shout on the 405.

This is what my dad actually had as a daily in 1990 however and I think that something like this would suit me, as long as it had PAS:

In an ideal world then an R32 Skyline GTR complete with the obligatory and timeless BBS LM's.

I've often daydreamed about picking up my black 1990 Saab 900T16S from the dealer with delivery miles, so that would be the obvious choice (although far from a daily driver now). Mine has a/c too essential in a DD IMHO.

Also high on the list are e34 M5, Citroen CX, and a 1.9 Peugeot 205 GTi in ?Miami Blue.

My choice would be a Honda Prelude 2.0 4WS

Owned one and it was a joy to drive, would happily own another.
Use one as my daily driver. Unfortunately mine is only 2WS.

However it is the rare JDM INX version with fixed headlights. Really good to drive - and as it only cost 300 pounds even better.

(Also no rust as it is in New Zealand).

BMW 318is (E30)

pros-fun to drive, reliable, economical
cons-a little too quick for enthusiastic driving on Victorian(Australia) roads, crap steering, crap stereo!

I'd consider buying a W124 estate but with all the options (280te or 300te-24, electric seats, air conditioning, sportline pack etc).

Could be a car for life if you were able to look after it from new!

Thought back to my 1990 daily, it was an Alfa 75. Still got (a different) one now which was my daily until recently.

So another one of those then please!
