What new car from 1990 would you run as a DD?

E34 M5 for me I should think
A good choice; I've never even been in this generation of M5 but I imagine I'd like the manual/straight 6 combination. Perhaps by having a new one it would avoid the issues that people seem to mention every time the e34 M5 comes up (how bad can it be compared to modern cars though?!)Just listen... (before it gets too windy)

Can't believe it's not been posted yet! Saab 900 T16S and has been my daily for 3.5 years
~250,000 miles, still goes like a train, puts the boot of space of any euro box today to shame, with seats down bigger load space than some estate cars. Joy to work on and parts are cheap. Also comes with heated leather seats, electric mirrors, cruise control and mid to low 30s mpg on motorway to boot.

That is a stunner!

They're cracking cars. The engine sounds amazing, but I've only been in a later 3.8, and only once.

Wonderful - it's such a shame that BMW are no longer doing a petrol NA straight 6, I know all the modern engines are far more drivable, powerful, economical and so on. Just listen... (before it gets too windy)

The e28 525 to e28 M535/M5 up to the E46 M3 made me like the NA straight 6 engine configuration and associate it with BMW. The Z4m down to Cornwall late at night (oh yes!) a few years ago was the last recent NA BMW engine I drove.
My current daily (well one of two)....
I had it in storage for nearly 8 years before finally getting it back on the road last May. Put around 10k on it since then, a mixture of cross-country Mway and Aroad slogs and short trips to the train station, its been great. Must have been great to own when new. Although I have found that every bugger in a diesel hatch or an Insignia tries to race me.

If I lived in America, something like the second car would be on the cards. They were pretty fast back for their day and probably still feel it!Do they not hit 60 in the low 5's? That's still quick today!

Ideally the 130bhp GTX, a sort of long wheelbase 205 GTi. My 1993 2 litre did Alpine ski-trips 5 up, towed a rally car, and competed in autotests and road rallies. Truly a great all-rounder.
I used to work as a minicab driver years ago and we had one of these on the fleet. It was a 1.9tdi and it felt huge. I was always chuffed when I managed to bag a shift in it, it was surprisingly good to drive.
