The flip side with the 'Badge' argument, if you want to talk about stigma, is you are buying one of the worst contemporary Porsche's available. Whereas you are buying one of the best Honda's!

+1 I bought my S2000 over a 6k Porsche largely because of the badge!

Cult status Honda or bottom of barrel Porsche... it was no contest for me

The other difference is running costs when looking at Boxster v S2000. New tyre of S2k is £125 - approx. £250 on Boxster. S2000 - have just had the 54k service £330.00 including parts, labour and VAT. I am pretty sure a major service like that would be approx. £1500 to £2000 in Boxster.

Generally Yes 70% of the time the S2000 is just a good-looking, boring, reliable, functional, comfortable etc car - which the wife thinks is great. The other 30% of the time (like 6am runs and clear weather journeys on nice roads i.e. whenever you actually want to enjoy any car) it is great fun with the noise (open airbox), handling and general speed/acceleration when opened up even in stock tune. My 04 model handles very well although quite unstable/unsettled weight when nailing and lifting off (even in straight line) - just remember to drive it like a single seater in the wet and you will enjoy. They are not designed to be driven badly! After 3 years I love it and just know it will work perfectly next time I go to use it.

I can understand why some are so dismissive of S2000s but I get lots of thumbs up and similar (and the wife is always let out in junctions) from people who appreciate cars. Bearing in mind the aforementioned running costs and grin factor for between £5000 and £8000 for most of them you can do a lot worse.

apologies - may have been wrong in prior note about Boxster servicing - they are not £1500 to £2000 but can be that when a few things go wrong! and still more than S2000. had a ride in new Boxster S last night - great cars - have to admire them

Having owned mx5s, a s2000 and an early boxster, if buying again I would always go for the boxster, far better car than a s2000 much easier to drive fast on the rosd and track. The engine is alot nicer. Running costs on the boxster are slightly cheaper than a s2000 as it runs ok on lower octain fuel, costs far less to Insure and servicing is the same if regular garages are used. Tyres cost the same as any other car with the same wheel size (ie s2000) and depend on the brand used I liked falkin's for about £100 a corner. Only think better about a s2000 is they look alot nicer but you cant see this when driving anyway.

If spending 20k, get a Coxster S. Better badge.

If spending 10k, get an S2000. Best-in-class howly engine.

If spending 5k, get an MX5. Good handling for the money. And will get you to the hairdressers with a smile.
