PH thoughts on this 'Advanced' driver's dashcam vids?
Discussion
Worse thing about it is the thread where the videos are advertised is called 'Drivers duty to inform police about driving offenses' and is about recording minor misdemeanors and reporting them to the bobbies.
The guy in those vids is clearly a wannabe bobby with phrases like 'yankee romeo' etc etc...
And then...just read this in the same thread as a response to this one:

'Advanced' driving has always been very much a minority interest, and rapidly developing technology is going to reduce the potential audience even further.
Those who wish to enjoy their driving in the future (advanced or otherwise) are going to have to make specific arrangements to get that enjoyment.
A pretty damning indictment, if this is how the AD fraternity gets their enjoyment! Those who wish to enjoy their driving in the future (advanced or otherwise) are going to have to make specific arrangements to get that enjoyment.
Not so clear cut as we have no information on signalling. He certainly seems to just anchor up.
Personally have a better opinion if the slant was along the lines of, say, 'having trouble controlling situation behind when desiring to stop and reverse into drive, any suggestions on strategy? ' as opposed to the line taken.

I find it hard sometimes to communicate my intent to reverse onto my drive - not helped by the neighbours who park on the other side of the road which can make it difficult to signal my intent unambiguously and also sometimes to let them by before I make my manoeuvre. I tend to pull off the road across my drive these days and wait for them to move.
When you have the kind of drivers who will pull up to the back of a car pulled up beyond a gap, signalling left and showing reversing lights, you can't really assume that anything will be understood.

The other drivers have left plenty of space to move around the car that has pulled over at the side of the road, as can be seen by the BMW who goes to pull past.
What neither of them were expecting was for him to suddenly engage reverse and start moving without any prior warning or acknowledgement of other road users.

Charming, I do find it rather funny that quite a few of you think you know how old I am... You're wrong.
Upon people's reactions here, I've take the videos down, and I will attempt to explain my reversing manoeuvre.
OP: I have tried every method of reversing onto the drive there is, and none work great.
As I start passing the junction, I indicate, and flash the reversing light. Pull in to a few feet width to the kerb, just past the driveway. Then reverse onto the drive. Nothing sudden, no dropping anchors,
Stopping short of the drive then moving forward again doesn't work, as drivers behind just follow, and stop too close.
I stop a foot or 2 from the kerb to avoid damaging the alloys, like any PH'er would do.
If anyone wants to toss a suggestion, I'd be happy to oblige to attempt it, and post the video.

How about letting the cars behind you past before you start reversing?
You could give them a hint of your intentions by, oh I don't know, sitting there with the car in reverse for more than two seconds before starting the manoeuvre.
Also, how do you flash your reversing lights whilst driving along? Maybe they think there's a fault with them so aren't actually expecting you to reverse when they come on. Again.

I've taken considerable amounts of further driver training and can see no cause for congratulation in those videos.
I haven't commented on the videos deliberately...I just hate all the guys who jump on the chance to attack advanced drivers/driving & the IAM etc - often with very little knowledge (yourself excluded by the sound of it).Often those 'outside' advanced driving seem to pick up on bad examples or pedantic observers and use that to throw the whole thing out...like I said there are good and bad in every club/company/group of people.
Would you agree advanced driving taught properly is great and a 'genuine contribution to road safety' (as they say) and everyone should be encouraged to do it?

What about slowing down well in advance, left indicator on and slow and swing the front towards the centre of the road (carriageway looks wide enough for you to get some angle on it). This should make your reverse easier.
What would you class as well in advance? I usually start slowing as I pass the junction. I'll give it a go on the way home tomorrow for you.Dom

Drop the attitude fella, I'm ignoring a lot of the personal attacks and insults, lets give it a rest eh.You could give them a hint of your intentions by, oh I don't know, sitting there with the car in reverse for more than two seconds before starting the manoeuvre.

To let all the cars past, I'd need to be there for a good few hours unfortunately.
To flash them, I lift up the ring and slide the knob over to the right, makes the light come on without engaging reverse gear.

I reverse my car down my drive from the main road sometimes in traffic. I can't say that I have ever noticed a problem.Dom
Thinking about it, I indicate left and slow, and then I flick the front end to the right because if I don't my car doesn't have enough steering lock to get around. Maybe its the turning to the right just before I come to a stop? It means I don't have to drive past the drive and gives quite an obvious intent. Try that

Why is that? Or is it the obvious that it looks like?martine said:

Hi, to be quite honest it wasn't the cameracar drivers' technique particularly that offended me. It does look like a stressful situation to be fair.Often those 'outside' advanced driving seem to pick up on bad examples or pedantic observers and use that to throw the whole thing out...like I said there are good and bad in every club/company/group of people.

It was the fact that those videos had been posted on YT to attempt humiliation on the drivers concerned, who imo, and most others in this thread, were quite rightly confused. That was where the offense was taken.

Yes Martin I agree 100% with your statement, no problem there. The problem was those nasty YT videos, I see they have been removed following the damage limitation excercise at ADUK, a wise move.
Perhaps you might realise one day why you are all so badly perceived, those vids coming from a local group chairman were a disgrace, I think we're all agreed on that fact.
