Yes, erm, I am not sure if the author proof read or thought his article through. Who on earth takes a Landrover out and then complains about a lack of Satnav and then about how big it is. As has been said they are actually very narrow and not particularly big (in overall volume/displacement) overall when compared to a family saloon these days.

He will be complaining of lack of boot space and off road capability in a Porsche Boxster next.

Incidentally he has a fiancee (female) or a fiance (male).... I am just 'bi' curious ;-)

Agreed. Cut and paste others thoughts I think. Lazy journalism. Current gearbox is pretty much car like (very average car I'll grant you) really compared to previous model, as I commented earlier. So there's either something wrong with this one - or his driving. Seems to have just refered to the 'standard defender comments' page of his crib book tbo. Bit like nearly all journos automatically said M3's steering wheel was 'too fat' after the very first reviews yet virtually all owners seem to love them................

Oh dear. Poor Defender. All that tat - the wheels, the 'upgrades'... There's only one good defender and that's one as it came from the factory. Then it is sublime.
Then you totally miss the point of Landys. The point is that there are millions, possibly even billions of combinations and permutations, mods, adaptations, tweaks, customisations and add-ons. They are made to work for a living, and this one's job is to lug gear around. I have to say it is a pretty damn good urban vehicle - small, with corners that you can see to park, and with a high up driving position.

A Landy that is standard is just as much of a shame as all those other Chelsea tractors on the school run. Which, incidentally is earning billions of pounds for the UK economy and employing tens of thousands of (well paid for a change) jobs in manufacturing, design and development.

In my mind, a proper Defender needs a V8 engine. Something the factory doesn't supply, and hasn't done so for a long time.

If all it is doing is carrying stuff around- why does it need all the added-on shiny stuff?

I saw this today in Glasgow. It was being driven by a beautiful blonde girl but I didn't take her photo because I was playing it cool

Saw the PH Defender on the M3 - the driving was not a good advert IMHO

Well each to their own... my way was an old one which then got a 4.6 V8 and an auto (because it was harder to drive off-road in the competitions I do).

Anyway with all that nice paint I'm uncertain you'd allow this smile

No one. They take a Land <space> Rover.

I never quite understand why if all the bits on it are so average does it cost so much...

Actually, however nice a V8 is in a land rover (and I have one of those in a series) generally a Turbo Diesel works best in a Defender - low down effortless torque (and I also have a 200tdi, a 300tdi and a TDCi version of that) - and yes, you're right that that there are endless permutations and maybe I overstated the 'as factory' position, but a blinged up defender with extra lights, big alloys, chequer plate and graphics always looks pretty rubbish.

Because Land Rover have an inflated opinion of themselves and their brand name.

Hence £600 for a tow bar in the other thread for Chris Harris range rover.

Hard to avoid a thread where it suddenly becomes a holier than thou critique.

Looks are subjective. It's just boys and their toys folks, i thought PH was about embracing that.

Hmm, £36K for a Defender? OK.

But did you check the bill - "18-inch Grey Sport wheels £1,445". Where are they then - the ones on it look like white 70's Weller steelies....!!!

A cheery wave from the Frankie Boyle lookalike in the PH Defender this morning on the M40.
