V12 6.0 Audi Q7.

Practical as fook and better fuel economy than the 4.2 petrol.

I'll qualify that with you probably couldn't get much worse than the petrol but if you want the 'something this size should NOT be accelerating this quickly' feeling....

Go for it.

Hot hatch wise your probably looking at GTDs and 123d

I've had a GTD, quick and frugal. Would look at a 123d though for more involvement

Saab 9-3 TTiD if looking at used. 180bhp out of the box, 210 on a sensible map, twin scroll turbo silly amount of torque, mpg nearer a 6 for first digit than 5.

Don't think it's the fastest though... but a leftfield choice if you're not a Bee Em fan.

How about the Audi A6 BiTurbo?

313 BHP and hits 60 in a touch over 5 seconds with a limited 155 mph top end. In anyone's book that's fast!

Remapped C350D? 325 bhp and 575 lb ft - 13,3 quarter mile - that quick enough?

See the MB section, there was a write up a while ago.

E350 coupe, peach of an engine, sounds great for a diesel with reasonable economy and with 420 lb/ft of torque

Fast diesels make little sense to me. They all sound crap, are unpleasant to use, but will help add points to your licence if you extend them.

Get a 4 pot diesel for economy, or a proper petrol for driving pleasure (the proper petrol is often not too far from the 'performance diesel' in economy terms in any case).
