Fast diesels make little sense to me. They all sound crap, are unpleasant to use, but will help add points to your licence if you extend them.

Get a 4 pot diesel for economy, or a proper petrol for driving pleasure (the proper petrol is often not too far from the 'performance diesel' in economy terms in any case).
V6 Audi diesels sound ok. Well, better than 4 pots...

Not driving like a loon, yes! My colleague has a TiD that regularly nudges over 60 (not the twin turbo granted), my old 9-5 (also single turbo) could also muster over 50 and that was akin to driving the QEII. Put your foot down though and it might sink into the 40s, should have thought that through what with the OP wanting "the fastest"...

Saab 9-3 TTiD if looking at used. 180bhp out of the box, 210 on a sensible map, twin scroll turbo silly amount of torque, mpg nearer a 6 for first digit than 5.

Don't think it's the fastest though... but a leftfield choice if you're not a Bee Em fan.
Is the MPG really that good?
I have the 150bhp version and average 44mpg on mixed driving.

We must be hypermilers then... or diesel's ste back home.

ETA - the kicker is my mileage was 95% motorway.

Why do you need more horsepower from a diesel than 184?

I drove the latest A5 3 litre this week and it doesn't sound better than a good 4 cylinder petrol.

I guess it's all relative though - compared to 4 cylinder diesels the Audi 6 cylinder is better.

I've done a bit of googling and the official stats show the Audi A6 BiTurbo hits 60 mph in 5.1 seconds. There's no diesel faster than that in standard form.

i wouldn't call Alpina "standard form" as they have taken a car from the production line and then modified it? Nice cars, mind... but hardly standard build?

Well there is the F30/31 335d 4.6 seconds quite a lot quicker.

I drove a new Merc Class today with the 250 Diesel engine. It's only 204bhp but it has many, many torques. I think I might buy one

It's hard to buy the fastest of diesels, when you have ruled out pretty much all the faster diesels.

Your own criteria doesn't suit what you really wanted in the first instance.

I can't think of any fast diesels off the top of my head that aren't one of the big German cars.

All the rest will be small 4 pot diesels on par to what you have now.
