though the Audi q7 6ltr v12 is certainly the queskest of all diesels road legal
No it isn't, it's the most powerful but not the quickest 5.5 to 62 and 186hp/tonne is bettered by quite a few others.

This excludes all BMWs so it therefore holds the crown.
Eh? Aren't BMWs road legal?

It isn't even the quickest diesel Audi anymore.

But what's that got to do with your assertion that the Q7 is the fastest road legal diesel car? Like I said it's not even the fastest diesel Audi.

All of my motoring life, fastest = highest top speed; quickest = best acceleration. confusedscratchchin

In which case the bi turbo audi and Q7 6ltr are both limited to 155mph and many many other non BMW diesels are limited to 155mph.

Skodia VRS Petrol....

I know it's off the criteria, but if your mileage is on a run I get 39. Being Petrol it's a bit cheaper than derv so equivalent to 42/43 mpg.
Its certainly utterly off topic

Topic is fastest diesel car - you suggest a petrol vRS.....
The original questions was

So reasonably economical petrol's fit the bill too. I'm impressed you're getting that high an mpg out of the vRS though, a mate had one and I don't think he ever got over 30. I average 47 in my diesel version. I assume you're mainly cruising on motorways?
Busy days.

Yes mainly motorways.

Welshbeef is taking over from 300bhp/ton and suggesting whatever pops into his head irrespective of the OP's criteria.

That said, the OP's criteria are so absurd that taking the piss is pretty much essential.

Fastest they do is a XF 3.0D which is a fair bit slower than a C350 335d A6 Bi-Turbo Diesel to be honest

My serious answer is some kind of mapped VAG diesel. Golf GTD maybe?

It reminds me of that sketch in Little Britain in the bookshop. People used to come in the showroom when I was working in sales and do similar too.

Customer: Have you got any Golfs?
Me: Yes.
C: Petrol?
M: Yes.
C: 3 doors?
M: Yes.
C: Automatic?
M: Yes.
C: Yellow?
M: Erm, no!
C: Oh. Can you give me a call if you do?

I know the OP said he was staying clear of BMW.

Good or bad decision, who knows.

I have a E46, 320d and also do around 90% motorway driving, to work and back.
The mpg is astonishing, always sitting between 62 and 64 mpg.

Bog standard, with 150 bhp

You should try the F30 320d auto - a lady at work with me (she has worn out a set of pads and discs in the the brand new cars first 20k miles) her average MPG is over 50!!!!

I'd expect that you should get into the 80's mpg if your really really trying.
