Didnt realise some folks were so touchy on these forums. A simple question and I've received heaps of great responses along with some interesting hands-on advice sbout some of the models best to avoid. I will now take JQ's advice and look into some options on the whatcar.co.uk website - you may have even persuaded me to avoid volvo altogether. Thanks everyone.

@FredClogs: Is your S-Max a FL model?

.
I'm not sure its an early one 56 pre face lift, I'd have thought for may have sorted out some of the niggles, to be fair mechanically is been perfect and still moved along well.

We have 3 kids and have coped pretty well with an e60 5 series for the last 6 years. However, my kids are getting bigger and for the next 5/6 years I am looking to get an SUV - I just fancy one over an MPV. I like the look of a Tourareg, an XC60 215 or a LR Discovery 4 for the 7 seat option. None as quick as a big diesel exec, but still with a half decent turn of pace for what they are, plus acres of space.

How do you get 3 isofix seats in the back of an E60 side by side? Or could an adult sit in the middle between two kids seats with another kid in the passenger seat?

SMax and every other MPV and SUV should be a hybrid with electric only for 10-15 miles would save a huge amount for Mums and the local air quality.

We don't use isofix we used to use 2 boosters and the eldest is in the middle without a booster. Now, only the youngest uses a booster.

With regard to Volvo XC90 vs S-Max: my wife and I test drove both before buying an XC90. The S-Max is nicer to drive but we found the visibility terrible compared to the XC90, and she had the casting vote...

The other factor in the Volvo's favour is that there remains a usable boot even when you have the third row of seats raised (you can fit in a baby buggy and more). This is true of few MPVs - only the really big ones like VW Sharans and Ford Galaxies manage it. In the medium size ones there is next to no boot space left.

We've had no problems with the DPF. The turning circle isn't brilliant but we don't find it a problem, and live in London.

I posted a link to an ad for a used XC90 with the 311hp V8 engine earlier in this thread but the link didn't work. That's the only XC90 derivative that will get you any PH-cred (ours in a D5...).

I really would look again at the S-Max. Amazed to read that the law is changing to force every child to sit in a booster seat regardless of size. I'm 6'5" and weigh 20 stone and my wife is 5'10". When I was 11 I was 6'2" and 15 stone of muscle (martial arts) with size 15 feet. I'm gonna love trying to shoehorn our baby into a booster seat at 12 haha.... :/
