Don't forget that there is the 2.5t XC90. A lot less problematic.

I personally couldn't live with a high mileage potential money pit , so if I really wanted a big 4x4 type thing I'd be considering that ugly 4x4 lexus the name of which escapes me just now. Presumably it's as reliable as all lexuses tend to be. Luxurious comfort as well, I suspect.

Not my area of interest really though. Just dropping it off as an idea on my way past.

A mate of mine had one & the only thing I remember about it was that the fuel consumption was horrific - even for a petrol 4x4.

Sticking with the Jeep theme, how about the Commander?

Bit bigger with a more utilitarian look but shares a lot of oily bits with the GC.

£10k will buy an excellent example.

Quite rare but the Nissan Pathfinder does occasionally come in a petrol flavour.

I don't know much about the engine, I have the diesel version, bulletproof so far

£5k should get you a face lifted X5 in either straight 6 or V8 form and winter tyres. More than suitable for getting over the hills in winter and quite good fun for an SUV.

I'm in a similar boat, I need something to tow the horses.

Don't fancy blackening their lungs with a diesel but also don't want to scare them with a grumbling V8...

Good call. I had one of these for a while. It needed revving to make swift progress, but it was a pleasant, willing engine. Also, the X-Trail felt a lot more nimble and fun to drive than some more agricultural 4x4s. 30 mpg was possible on a run too. Nice shed that didn't look too obsolete.
