I find it strange how people spend £20k on a kitchen which the moment its finished is worth sod all because nobody will buy it - if you want something have it if you can afford it - all the bleating about depreciation probably means they cant afford it anyway !!
Good example, if you are happy enough to put the money down in the first place it is likely because you can afford it, you don't need the money for anything else and you want the use of a new item etc.
What I find particularly bizare is that it is only ever VW or rather VAG products that people get so hung up on the price, there isn't a weekly "how much for a new Focus/Astra/Guilleta/Megane!" thread
Those manufactures pricing is also influenced by exchange rates & inflation along with many other variables ....

So besides the 2.0 and 1.8 versions of the mk4, what was wrong with the 1.8T GTI version?
I quite like the look of them, and the 2.8 4Motion.
A long time ago in a galaxy far, far, away... my boss had one as a company car. I didn't see a lot wrong with them. To a 20-year-old, they had a lot of poke, but the main criticism levelled at them were that they were too slow. Can't say I noticed at the time.I quite like the look of them, and the 2.8 4Motion.
I've been tempted to investigate the values of LHD Mk IVs for a fun and above all cheap toy, but Volkswagens have never really grabbed my attention behind the wheel. In which case, is the Mk III a better bet?

Buy the car you want and dont get pussy whipped into a cheap alternative - oh, and before i get the 'a megane 265 is faster' a 'focus st is more fun' comments, i bought the golf because i like it - i dont care if its not as fast or not as much fun, its suits me great thankyou and i can afford it !!
I've got a crap kitchen and no conservatory though !!!

Dynamically they fell well behind the competition at the time. VW thought everyone wanted a big soft 'premium' feeling GT style car and then Ford brought out the Focus which wiped the floor with the Golf in terms of involvement and ride control....people voted with their feet and went straight to the Ford dealerships. Not to say the Mk4 didn't sell, but anyone who wanted a car that was sprightly to drive chose the Focus over the Golf.I've been tempted to investigate the values of LHD Mk IVs for a fun and above all cheap toy, but Volkswagens have never really grabbed my attention behind the wheel. Comparing the two, the Focus felt light on it's feet, had a really good front end (even in basic 1.6 petrol form), rode exceptionally well with tight body control and was genuinely involving and entertaining to drive. The Golf was soft and wallowy, the steering felt very low geared and uncommunicative, the chassis balance was hugely understeer led and it crashed in and out of pot holes. It was not in any way involving. The R32 was the closest they came to addressing some of the issues, although it was still a very heavy car.
I had a Mk1 Octavia vRS which was, by most accounts, more entertaining to drive than any of the Mk4 GTIs....it was a decent enough car, but going from that to my MkV GTI made the Mk4 chassis feel like that of a tired Vauxhall Cavalier!

Limited Edition Tartan seats, replica golf ball gearknob, some BBS wheels and an extra 5K on the price?
Well the GTI/D both have a golf ball gear knob, so nothing new there. The insinuation that the "Edition" specials aren't that special is pretty accurate though. Just hopeful they'll do something more impressive this time.
Owned a Mk1 (1.3 driver IIRC) as a run around for a while and sold it far to cheaply, but it was to someone who wanted to do a full restoration, so.... Was fun to punt down a twisty road despite it's complete lack of power.
Had loan of a race prepped (140 bhp 1.6 blue printed engine) Mk1 for a while too. Much more fun.
I've owned my Mk2 since '96.. Not as nimble down a very twisty road at slower speeds as the Mk1, but far better planted every where else. I'd disagree with the comment about ruining it by putting 200bhp + through the front wheels, but then agree about the 20v T conversions... horses for courses...
I've no interest in any later models, although the Mk4 R32 looks nice..
