Trying to bring this thread back from a slanging match.

I've never owned a Golf GTI and my own experience of them is being a passenger in my colleagues MK5 and it was very impressive. Personally I'm not a fan of the tartan interior but I'm eyeing up a Mk7 3door with DSG and performance pack but they are a bit expensive for now but I hope in a couple of years time to have one on the drive.
I think the tartan trim is class

All 200+ of them?

I used to be a VW salesman. Maybe yours was a good one wink
Still got it, it was sold in principal. My wife changed her mind so she kept it. We just couldn't find a ed 30/ r32 in good enough condition, plus she did not like the build quality on a mk 5. Somehow it seemed a cheaper car

I'm thinking of off loading the golf tdi and getting back into a gti (I hate diesels and I don't need one anymore). I quite fancy an ED30 but is it worth the extra cash over a standard mk5 gti?

Like I said, banter. It wasn't sold as it was a poor car. It was sold due to wanting a change

eople get caught up on "it's £30k for a Golf!" but conveniently forget about inflation. Also, I'm pretty sure finance has made buying a car nowadays a lot easier than back then. If they're not as (admittedly subjectively) popular now as they were in say, 1989 then it's probably due to factors such as choice of what's on sale, what is "fashionable" i.e. SUVs and the like, but almost certainly not because of the price.
Many peoples salaries haven't kept up with inflation by way of pay rises and bonuses are scant for many folk these days. Were it not for the 'sole trader' loophole I suspect their sales figures for the mk7 might be significantly different.

Although Mk5 GTI's were easily bought brand new in 2006/7 for £16.5k.

I bought one, and it was great. But not £30k great.
Wow, that is cheap. That's diesel SE/Match money. Whereabouts was that? I was selling VWs, when the Mk5 was first launched and it was 19995 on the road for the 3dr and 500 more for the 5 door. Factory order, no discounts, no free mats or fuel or nothing. Still sold like hot cakes though! I think all the ones I sold were black 5 door manuals! The starting price was pretty reasonable really, as long as you kept away from the options list (easy to spec it up to 25kish and then you were getting into R32 money). Was there a better all-round new car available for 20k in 2005? Would probably be my what DD from 2005 (no-one start a thread though)!

Quite the revelation at the time, as the only comparable product available was the EP3 Type R and that was a completely different beast and didn't even come with air conditioning as standard. The Focus ST and Astra VXR would come a bit later.

Would I buy a new Golf GTI today? Probably not. If someone else was paying then yes, it would still be a lovely car to own and I would prefer it to a Focus ST. I'm sure it would be fast enough stock but easily tuneable if it bothers you that much. The looks are conservative but nicer than the ST IMO, as is the interior. If it was my money though, then I would take the Focus any day and live with the styling and interior for more power and a significantly cheaper price (but if it was a 2nd car I would go for one of the smaller hot hatches like the Fiesta ST)!

sell it then
Owes me far too much in parts for me to afford to sell it now
Done work myself but it has needed
Bottom End
Headgasket
Timing Belt + Waterpump
Clutch + Fly
Full Set of Brakes
ABS Sensor
Turbo
A/C Compressor
Springs all round
Front Subframe
Lower Arms
Bushes
Trackrod Ends

From 96k to its current 107k cost me approx £1k in parts and countless weekends fixing the thing.

Has been fine for last 4/5k miles but even now sorted with choice mods still not very nice to drive just already have one project car and probably getting a company car so stuck with it for now.

I love them, had a few Gtis with 4 non Gti Golfs in scattered in.

Only one I've missed out on was the mk3 (not great reviews) and the mk7 (not in my budget at present)

My favourites to drive have been the mk5 Gti and I've just taken one in px on my current mk6.
Both manual and DSG are great, I'm getting older and lazy now hence my latest.

Mk4 wasn't my cup if tea, maybe because it was a fill in after an s2000 and 3 integras.

I had a 360bhp S3 before my current mk6 Gti, fast in a straight, but felt bulky and heavy compared.

The wife is on here second mk6 GT TDi and make a good all rounder.

Mk1 sportline

Mk2 8v

Mk2 16v

Mk4 1.8t

Mk5 gti dsg number 1

Mk5 dsg gti number 2

Mk5 gti number 3

Just sold my mk6 dsg this week, mk5 candy white in px smile

Strange, my wifes has been superb over the 4.5 years she has had it. It is a 2 owner from new car with 64 k on the clock. The only money she has spent apart from servicing and brakes is a coil pack

Mine was 3 owners from new completely standard full VW service history

Had a problem so when the oil pick up pipe got blocked (common had no warning on dash as sensor had failed) had just had an oil change but of course VW didn't think to clean the pipe even though its an issue. Which in turn led to the bottom end being fked when did this saw turbo was about to fail so did that as well along with the clutch/fly headgasket etc...

If you have a 1.8T or are considering buying one whip the sump off and clean the oil pick up pipe then do this every other oil change (I do mine ever 6k miles) takes only 30 mins or so but is an essential thing to do.

I'm not sure anybody is slating the mk4 golf, dull as it is but the mk4 GTI which never deserved a GTI badge in any form, it was watered down big time with the dreadful 2.0 and really wasn't great at its pinnacle with the anniversary with its sump smashing habits.

That's why from what I can remember the mk5 was a sigh of relief.

They are dull to drive but one thing as said is they can be made brisk mine is the AUM engine have had it remapped by RTECH better intake couple of other bits is approx 220hp and 250 torque so it is pretty nippy for what looks like a standard 15yr old 5 door golf.

You can't get them to handle though no matter what you do I have added the TT wishbones polybushed and lowered it a bit and still just is not that great really.

That was the problem, the chassis was woeful, sports suspension and Santa Monica alloys were the best it got.

Yeah I came from a Clio 172 Cup to this car (was meant to be a stopgap before spent so much on it) which just makes it seem even worse when compared to a decent rival of the same sort of era

You are missing my point, the car is a good every day vehicle. If you want a toy buy a proper fast car
