Is the new Type R concept too much of a boy racer special?
Discussion
It seems quite hard to buy a subtle hot hatch these days. They all seem to have extra exhausts, skirts, spoilers, huge wheels, etc. I suppose the problem is that standard cars have become sportier looking so the actual sporty ones have had to go rather OTT in order to visually differentiate themselves.

4 EXHAUST TIPS(Golf R)
Both the S3 and Golf R have 4 exhausts. Otherwise though, they are pretty restrained. Does the Leon Cupra follow suit?
It's a good point with the Civic though; it's meant to be a mainstream hot hatch and I do think they risk pushing people towards the trusty Golf GTI. They are better off selling the big wing as an option pack.
It seems their biggest problem at the moment is that they made a rod for their own back by declaring the Civic would be the 'Ring King.

What I don't get is that they style these cars in a way that only 17-21 year olds want to buy them. It's rare though that someone of that age can actually afford one though, let alone afford to insure it.
I had the EP3 Type R and loved it - understated, pretty fast and has aged very well IMO. The new version, whilst being quick, just doesn't float my boat (maybe because I'm now 35!). It's just too "out there" looks wise.

To me there's a very fine line between too much and just plain silly (which is what some of these super hatches should be imo)
e.g. The Mk.2 Focus RS - big vents, spoiler, massive arches etc. Perfect because it's a ludicrous silly car. I take the same opinion of the new Type R - silly wings and aero bits, ludicrous arches etc. It's not supposed to be a shrinking violet, it shouts its ridiculous performance.

Very good point and i completely agree but where do you draw the line between?e.g. The Mk.2 Focus RS - big vents, spoiler, massive arches etc. Perfect because it's a ludicrous silly car. Thing is, people complain incessantly that hot hatches are too subtle, then VW add 4 exhausts to their ranger topper and Honda go a bit lairy with the Type-R and people throw their arms in the air.
The manufacturers could give their buyers the choice. If I was going to buy something like this I'd rather it was indistinguishable from the cooking versions of the car. It's not a accident that it's been styled in this way. They don't want old, fat, balding middle aged men to buy one. They want young, cool, hip hoppin kids to buy them.
I like it, good for Honda, they finally made a hot hatch that actually looks noticeably different to the standard car. Too many manufacturers add a red stripe and a badge. Kudos for putting a bit more thought into it.

Exactly, they've identified their target audience and tailored the car to them. Why wouldn't you do that?Have Honda's designers taken inspiration from this... http://www.barryboys.co.uk/photos20/7109167337a62b...
