I think it looks brilliant - it is a bit OTT but if this is backed up by stunning engineering and abilities, who cares?

Is this really much different to a GT3 RS with its big wing and script on the front wings?

If I wanted dull, I would get a Golf.

I'm 36, wear a suit to work and drive a type R (FN2). I get loads of comments from clients and co-workers, mostly along the lines of "Why didn't I think of one of these when I bought that diesel Golf?" I've not had a single person openly snigger at man going grey driving a Boy Racer car.

I have however had a few comments about my MX5.

I'm not surprised if it's horny!

And it has less to do with what other people think and more to do with what it make me feel like. If I feel like a berk driving it, as I'm starting to do with the Evo, then it's not for me anymore. You pays your money, you makes your choice. My choice, after testing all the near £40k german hot hatches is to buy an Alfa for half that and put the rest into something much sillier.

Speaking as a 16-soon-to-be-17 year old, I'd guess that I'm in the target age range, and I actually like the look of it, which is unusual because I generally despise OTT styling, especially when it's little hatchbacks with a ridiculously tuned up engine done by a chav.

The Fiat Panda 100 HP is on the border of what is acceptable for me, which means this Type R is outrageous, but at the same time, I can't stop myself from smiling a bit at it, and wondering when they hired a 17-year-old to design it rofl
Didn't know 17 year olds were big on buying £30k cars wink
Of course, we're not the main purchasers laugh

I meant the marketing is probably being engineered so that the 17 year old yobs are going to be like "Oh my god I want one of those" and then fondly reminisce about these cars when they're older, so they end up buying a Type-R when they're 30 something.

Does that make sense or am I just talking a load of waffle?

I think part of the problem is that the car it's based on isn't exactly a looker. I really liked the three door version of the previous generation car but too me the new one has always looked like its melted. It's clear Honda thought the design of the previous car was a bit OTT so they toned it down to try and widen the car's appeal. Now they've gone full circle with the Type R. I'll give them credit for trying something different, but I'd be going for the Golf, Seat, Audi, BMW options if I wanted conservative, or Ford / Mercedes for something a bit more in yer face.

The BTCC car there is also the previous Civic version so I'm sure the fiddly front end will carry over.
Apart from that, incredibly similar.

I actually quite like the new Type-R
Note however that the touring car front end comes without the giant and silly fake air scoops. Among the worst of the aero-codpiece brigade so far. That and the pseudo vents on the rear of the front arches really spoil the car for (not that it is near as good looking as the previous gen to start with).

Bothers me a bit as I'm sure it is going to be a cracker. But then it is only a concept.

@Honda: if some one reads this, can we have something a bit more subtle for grown ups please? Paid option is fine if you must smile.

I quite like it….a bit. The problem is that it's bark is hugely louder than it's bite. Imagine how you and yo krew are gonna feel when Mr Pipe & Slippers smokes you off the lights in his golf.

I doubt we are looking at the next EK9.

What I don't get is that they style these cars in a way that only 17-21 year olds want to buy them. It's rare though that someone of that age can actually afford one though, let alone afford to insure it.

I had the EP3 Type R and loved it - understated, pretty fast and has aged very well IMO. The new version, whilst being quick, just doesn't float my boat (maybe because I'm now 35!). It's just too "out there" looks wise.
I like it (and Im 28) and I think that its right that it looks lairy. Its a steroided up hatch and it should sprout cartoonish appendages and look like its just burst off the page of a Gundam Wing comic. I am glad they had the balls to take the concept forward (going off the ad's I saw in the cinema recently, the huge rear wing and bull horn style light signature are there). Watch it flop though... you only have to look in any random carpark in this country to see that everyones favourite flavour is germanic grey, especially if germanic grey is the same price as in your face japanese robot. Its a wonder people can find their cars again once they come back! We're too conservative!!

I for one will have one of these on my wish list (providing the test drives and reviews come back positive...unlike the last one).

Ignore reviews. Learned that a good while back. Take test drives and decide if it suits you. I read all the Giulietta QV reviews but decided to try it anyway. Loved it and ordered one. The only issues, the underdamping and high speed float, will be sorted via Koni and Eibach.

The 2015 CTR looks awful.

A beautiful engine in an ugly wrapper.

The EP3 only looks subtle to modern eyes - it had big, flashy alloys with low profile tyres, a big rear roof spoiler and side skirts with decals on them. At the time it was about as subtle as a punch in the face.

That's all well and good if you find a dealer who will let you test without first committing to buy!!

You wouldn't feel embarrassed driving that though, even now. And it had enough power at the time to keep up.

I kinda like the new Type-R from a purely bonkers point of view, but I couldn't see myself spending £30k on one, and don't really understand how Honda expects the people to which it would naturally appeal to be able to afford it. Maybe leasing really is the intended model.

As has been said already £30k gets you into the more "respectable" metal, which one would assume mid/late 20 somethings who have £30k to spend will be considering. I say that as an EP3 owner at the moment (which "only" cost £17k back in the day)

I had a brand new one in 2002, loved it, but it was a lot less subtle than a mk4 Golf GTi or 306 GTI-6. I didn't care, but it was a bit much for some.
