Citreon C-crosser?
Dont laugh....
Its identical to the Mitsubishi Outlander except a few badges and body panels (as is the Peugeot version of it)
The first few years they were all made in Japan by Mitsu, the mitsu having a VW 2.0TD engine and the PSA group using their own 2.2TD lump (also used in the new Freelander). Later ones made in Holland, although all in the same production lines.
I had one for almost two years and had very little trouble with it, used it for my work too and the 4WD (been Mitsubishi of course) was very good, the lack of ground clearance letting it down. Could get 40mpg easily, 43-45 if taking it really steady.
Only issue I had with mine is that i damaged the container that held the fluid for the DPF* while off road and that cost £600 to put right. Now knowing how simple it was to do, I could of done it myself for half the price.

- The car uses a fluid to inject into the fuel system so that it reduces the temp needed to regen the dpf. The fluid costs about £170 and should last for 75k.

Extreme weather worrying you?
FWD and good winter tyres will cope with anything on road in the winter.
Ha. Under normal conditions I would completely agree with you. I have a mark 4 1250 zetec fiesta lying about and put a set of spare autograsss wheels I had on it and used it in the snow last yr, it was awesome until the big snow hit 4-5 ft in middle of the field and 10ft + drifts then to be honest I don't think a soft roader will do much either.FWD and good winter tyres will cope with anything on road in the winter.

One I haven't seen mentioned is the Vauxhall Frontera , possibly for good reason. i've noticed on some warranty documents I've had that in the event of diff problems any excess difference between tyres on the same axle will nullify the claim .
You don't specify the bad weather problems in May .Is it bad roads surface/bad ground or lack of ground clearance. Some one mentioned what might be the ideal answer - an AWD Insignia. In good conditions drive it ( if possible in FWD MODE ,with Insignia economy, which I can vouch is 40 -50- MPG)and bring in 4wd in the bad. Then there's another candidate not mentioned- Skoda YETI in 4wd guise . But if conditions get that bad ,might I suggest a 4x4 course to make you aware of where you can't go .

My wife likes the look of the jeep patriot. Any body else have any experience with these? Dodge nitro anyone?
Patriot isn't a proper four wheel drive and Nitro doesn't have all wheel drive. If you want a soft roader, which they are, there are far better cars out there.
