When Merc and quality didn't deserve to appear in the same sentence?

Or were they still pretty good?

It's the W124, right?

I like the coupe but the saloon is more practical of course.

Did they also make an estate version?

Is rust an issue like it was a few years later with the E-Class?

I'm thinking of one of the variant of these as a keeper/future classic.

Spares will never be an issue AFAIK due to MB policy on always manufacturing spares regardless of age.

From the hype I've read about 124s even I was beginning to think that they were craved from granite. Clearly not laugh.

Quite; I had been thinking that they are bomb proof (often described as such here).

Engine and drive train are probably fantastic but no good in a body that rots, not for me anyway!

Sure, the E39 gets little places where it rusts but not anywhere near the same scale as that forum discussion appears to suggest with the W124.

A little update. ...

I've bought a really straight E39 523i Tourer.

It's in great condition but needs a good valet.

I'll update the thread with some photos when I have it.

To be honest I was always of the opinion the W124 was the archetypal bomb proof German barge with doors that close like a bank vault etc etc, but seeing as they are 20 to 30 years old now, surely it's to be expected their might be issues with rust ?

Any mechanic in germany will tell you that they don't buil them like they used to in the days of the 124. The dark ages in Mer chistory started after the 124 with the 210.

Sitting a bit low at the rear?

Don't those have air suspension at the rear or something?

Rubber air bags or something IIRC.

Wasn't the air suspension only fitted to the 540i? Anyway, where the W124 rusts a bit, the E39 Colling systems disintegrate...pick your poison! No car is infallible.

Yes, air suspension on the rear.

The car is known by my mate who's a senior tech at BMW & he tested it and it's fine.

It stays at the same height when laden.
