A "B" service, car has only done 18,000 miles.

My only request was that the washer jets were unblocked.

I drooped the car (SLK AMG Diesel ) off yesterday with a lovely man, put a couple of packets of biscuits in my pocket and supped coffee.

Picked it up this morning and it was all shined, paid my bill, £391 and left.

Now the car is leaving my house on a transporter as after driving 10 miles it won't rev, struggles to start and is running all lumpy.

They've promised a replacement tonight, I wonder what they'll send.

Normal, main dealer service I guess. Nice showroom, men in suits and branded ties but unfortunately the work on the oily bits has made a great car worse and I'm nearly £400 worse off for the privilege.

Things go wrong between services...surprise.

Just so happened to occur a day after the service.

Just saying.

Things go wrong, it's how it's dealt with that will make the difference with your experience.

Funny my 18,000 mile old c class went in for a B service a couple of weeks ago and came back with a nice dent in the door.

It still seems to work though.

£450.

I agree things do go wrong and it's being dealt with very well.

However, unblocking washer jets shouldn't be hard.

I may have missed it, but did they actually unblock the washer jets?

Took my BMW to the local BMW dealership to be serviced and it came back fine. Took to the same dealers body shop for a new rear end after a young lady rear ended me and it came back with 5 deep scratches in the rear passenger door 2 long scratches in the tailgate a nice big burn through just above the petrol cap on the rear quarter panel and 2 chunks of plastic taken out of the side skirt. They seamed a bit putout when i said i wanted to see the manager and refused to take the car.Ive got a little speck of rust thats started to creap through on the window frame, a bit nervious about taking the car back to them as I'm worried what they'll fkup this time.

When I had my CLK it went in for a b service plus auto box fluid change at the local main dealer - £700ish, the clowns broke the air filter housing then tried to charge me for the part. Clearly didn't end up paying but put me off the brand.

My Focus ST went to a Ford dealer for an RS clutch, as the original slipped when they fitted the Mountune factory upgrades. Came back with the self levelling headlights pointing to the ground as they disconnected the sensor on the wishbone to get the driveshaft out, an airbox superglued together as they managed to crack that in half ( denied all knowledge and then said , they knew about it and had ordered a replacement FOC) and a deep gouge out the clutch steel pipe, ready to rust up, now the nickel coating was scraped off. And the best bit was on the drive of the car back to me, somehow managed 16 mpg. Something I have never managed for a trip down an A road at 60 mph.
I fixed it all myself with the parts they gave me, as I couldn't bear to see what damage they could do to something else fixing it.
Our current Volvo XC60, has been to the dealers 3 times to 'refinish' the wheel, which has a bit of paint damage when I pointed it out, at point of buying it. The main dealer took it to NCR . I knew it would be crap. It was. They lacquered the wheel nice and shiny. Thing is, the other 3 are matt silver. Not rocket science is it ? They also only did the face of it and lacquered all the brake dust inside it , so it always looks dirty. Round 4 due in a couple of weeks........
I could list more.........

This.

Smiley 'front of house' staff wearing pointy shoes that clack clack across the marble floors while the 17 year old apprentice nonchalantly mucks around with your pride and joy out the back.

I've just got my Amarok back from service, 100 mile round trip, 4 weeks notice to book it in, 4 hours waiting in the showroom because they refuse to book a time just a 'morning' or an 'afternoon', charged £300 for a glorified oil change and I arrive home to find it showing the oil is only 1/3rd of the way up the dipstick.

I asked them to switch me to 'interval' servicing of every two years as I only do 3000 gentle miles a year, they refused and said that I'd invalidate the warranty if I didn't bring it in every 12 months - why use the epically expensive Long Life oil then?

Bonus targeted mentality and careless work.

much rather use a solid indy than a main dealer.

bought a brand new pug taxi last year and in 100k it never saw a main dealer. everything was done by my local Peugeot indy ecosse. never a hassle everything done properly with genuine Peugeot parts by fantastically knowledgable staff who where more than happy to discuss any part of what they were doing and the main point. half the price of servicing as both robins and day and Arnold clark main dealers.

I used to be a car salesman at a Mazda main dealer (late 90s) so not the current or just past Mazda main dealer - they do seem to get through garages at a frightening rate, Mazda that is - and it was a permanent fight to get 'service' to do ANYTHING let alone do it right! I used to hear all the bullst they gave out to customers when in fact they'd just parked it round the back for three days without touching it and then declaring 'no fault found' or 'we couldn't reproduce the fault'.

Also, used to see the mechanics ragging the tits off anything 'tasty' and just generally thrashing anything else. It was a truly shocking place to work and I didn't last long, but then, neither did anyone else.

My next doors neighbours son, who I've known since he was at primary school, now works for them as a mechanic. This despite the fact that all the training he's had was at tech for a year before he declared himself 'qualified'. He's a lovely lad, but I'm always having to go round and fix his car when he's done it wrong (cam timing on a Corsa, putting back the spacers that hold the splash shield under the rocker cover which cured the horrendeous rattle it had developed after work.... his Dads car after he'd worked on the brakes) always late at night and it's needed for work the next day.

There are good dealers and mechanics out there but even they make mistakes sometimes (with modern cars with sensors everywhere, it's easy to knock one loose while working in the area), it's all about how they fix it afterwards that matters.

It's always worth talking to the mech who is actually gonna do the work (slip a few quid never seems to hurt either!) but of course, nowadays, dealerships don't want plebbie customers in the workshops, they may see what really goes on.....

I once drove off from a MB main dealer after collecting an M Class from service and new front brake pads, was juddering like hell.drove it straight back and had a look at the front wheels-only 1 bolt in each front wheel, someone had forgotten to put the remaining wheelbolts in.

Awful stuff and all too common.

An ex-salesman at my VW dealership told me the that 'technicians' who were considered to be best were those who charged out 16 hours during an 8 hour day.

Wasn't aware that AMG did a diesel engine car.
