Driverless cars testing on UK roads?

Yesterday afternoon I was on the A27 in Worthing when I saw a black current-shape 7 series travelling in the opposite direction. It was on foreign plates (possibly German), and was fitted with a roof rack. Mounted to the rack was a rapidly spinning grey cylinder, slightly tapered and about the rough size of a large paint tin. It was very similar to this:



A bit of Googling reveals this recent report suggesting that testing was still a few months away in the UK.

Given the proximity of Ricardo and to a much lesser extent, Rolls Royce, I was wondering who might be behind this test car? Are there more out there?
