MPG and your reasons!!!
Discussion
Didn't think it would bother me when I bought a Mazda CX7 back in January, even when I read that I'd be lucky to get 25mpg on a motorway run.
But the reality of 17mpg - even when I tried to drive with a level of restraint - and having to so spend £70+ every 10 days or so filling the tank really did test my patience. That and the fact VED was nearly £500 meant I got rid just 6 months later.
Replaced it with a V70 D5 SE and get 43mpg. Not as exiting to drive, nor as fast, but a real wafting barge and so comfortable.

Not really, I have gone from 45k miles a year to just 20k miles a year, so MPG is not that much of a concern in the grand scheme of things and overall running costs.
I like bigger cars and bigger engines, and have never got more than 20% better consumption when I have swapped to the diesel version, so it just isn't in my buying decision.
Having said all that...........
I do have a cut off for certain cars, like a 4x4 I want it to get 25mpg average or more, big estate I want it to get 30-35mpg average, smaller hatch like an A3 etc. I would want 40mpg, a 911 or M3 at 20mpg is however fine.
So I wouldn't go and buy a Supercharged RR over the TDV8, but I would definitely buy a 535i over a 535d, and would buy a 1.4tfsi over the 2.0tdi.
So rather than MPG in general being a concern it is more a case of I expect certain MPG from certain cars, if it is a boring car I want to get decent MPG.

Crikey you get 43mpg from a V70D5? That must just be on the motorway run not overall. I've been driving D5s for years and never get more than an overall average of 35mpg. Getting 13-18mpg daily out of the scoob didnt bother me as such but now im in a car that gets around 28-30 on the same journey im quite enjoying the 100 quid or so a month in fuel savings.
Also I can take my car on longer trips rather than suffering the indignity of driving the family bus

I have the same view as you giz, I expect a certain type of car to return decent mpg.
I'm happy if a supercar gets 6mpg but if its your daily run around it should have some respect for your pocket.
my oh's juke does 53mpg and is a nice place to be, its quick enough for her and £20 tax cant ask for much more really.
my mr2 averaged around 27mpg and I found that more than exceptable.

It all depends on personal preference and horses for courses. In general a big V8 or V12 powered car,for example, with 15 mpg fuel consumption and performance to match is going to be a liability for the wrong type of use like urban shopping runs etc etc.IE it's performance strong point will be irrelevant and unusable. While it's fuel consumption weak point will as a result be unjustifiable.
There really is no alternative to the idea of optimising both usage requirements by running the two different types of cars.

I do care about MPG. I loathe that my car can only manage around 34mpg when I'm behaving. Much less when I'm not. But that the price to pay for not driving a 60hp 4pot shoebox. Yes, I generally only drive it to work and back but you know, when I can put my foot down on a B road and enjoy that drive to work, it makes all the difference.
Plus I also love how it has the ability to embarrass young spotty oiks in their Daddies Ibiza Cupras when they're driving 2 inches off my rear bumper on twisty B roads.

Buying a car is a balancing act for me.
I want something nice to drive that justifies the running costs that come with it.
I do around 12-13,000 miles a year so it isn't vastly important, although sub 20mpg would be a sizeable bill and hard to justify unless the car was something I really desired.
I'm happy with 28mpg average in a very easy car to live with on a day to day basis. On a good run I know I can get mid 30s.

I manage that with a T5 on a run...Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
