I want to know if MPG bothers you or not and why?

I'll start; I think a car should have the ability to do reasonable mpg when your foot isn't welded to the loud pedal, why? because I personally hate going to the petrol station and find it a chore.

Didn't think it would bother me when I bought a Mazda CX7 back in January, even when I read that I'd be lucky to get 25mpg on a motorway run.

But the reality of 17mpg - even when I tried to drive with a level of restraint - and having to so spend £70+ every 10 days or so filling the tank really did test my patience. That and the fact VED was nearly £500 meant I got rid just 6 months later.

Replaced it with a V70 D5 SE and get 43mpg. Not as exiting to drive, nor as fast, but a real wafting barge and so comfortable.

great first reply, this the answers i'm after. seems a very boring question but its on PH that seems to start arguments.

do you have a fun vehicle to use or did you have to compromise on 1 vehicle?

I have two vehicles. Both of them are petrol. Both of them are capable of averaging over 60mpg. One of them can do 180mph and the other has heated seats.

I am avg 20.2 mpg ATM and very happy with that

The 12mpg I achieved over a week in an RS6 totally put me off it wink

Not really, I have gone from 45k miles a year to just 20k miles a year, so MPG is not that much of a concern in the grand scheme of things and overall running costs.

I like bigger cars and bigger engines, and have never got more than 20% better consumption when I have swapped to the diesel version, so it just isn't in my buying decision.

Having said all that...........

I do have a cut off for certain cars, like a 4x4 I want it to get 25mpg average or more, big estate I want it to get 30-35mpg average, smaller hatch like an A3 etc. I would want 40mpg, a 911 or M3 at 20mpg is however fine.

So I wouldn't go and buy a Supercharged RR over the TDV8, but I would definitely buy a 535i over a 535d, and would buy a 1.4tfsi over the 2.0tdi.

So rather than MPG in general being a concern it is more a case of I expect certain MPG from certain cars, if it is a boring car I want to get decent MPG.

Crikey you get 43mpg from a V70D5? That must just be on the motorway run not overall. I've been driving D5s for years and never get more than an overall average of 35mpg.

Getting 13-18mpg daily out of the scoob didnt bother me as such but now im in a car that gets around 28-30 on the same journey im quite enjoying the 100 quid or so a month in fuel savings.

Also I can take my car on longer trips rather than suffering the indignity of driving the family bus

I have the same view as you giz, I expect a certain type of car to return decent mpg.

I'm happy if a supercar gets 6mpg but if its your daily run around it should have some respect for your pocket.

my oh's juke does 53mpg and is a nice place to be, its quick enough for her and £20 tax cant ask for much more really.

my mr2 averaged around 27mpg and I found that more than exceptable.

It all depends on personal preference and horses for courses. In general a big V8 or V12 powered car,for example, with 15 mpg fuel consumption and performance to match is going to be a liability for the wrong type of use like urban shopping runs etc etc.IE it's performance strong point will be irrelevant and unusable. While it's fuel consumption weak point will as a result be unjustifiable.

There really is no alternative to the idea of optimising both usage requirements by running the two different types of cars.

For me, it's mostly just another factor of total running costs, although having to go to a petrol station is a bit of a pain.

MPG isn't an issue to me. I do 10k a year and I like cars; if I gave a st about MPG it would sevearly limit the choice of cars I'd buy.

To me, the lower the number the better! smile

I do care about MPG. I loathe that my car can only manage around 34mpg when I'm behaving. Much less when I'm not. But that the price to pay for not driving a 60hp 4pot shoebox. Yes, I generally only drive it to work and back but you know, when I can put my foot down on a B road and enjoy that drive to work, it makes all the difference.

Plus I also love how it has the ability to embarrass young spotty oiks in their Daddies Ibiza Cupras when they're driving 2 inches off my rear bumper on twisty B roads.

Buying a car is a balancing act for me.

I want something nice to drive that justifies the running costs that come with it.

I do around 12-13,000 miles a year so it isn't vastly important, although sub 20mpg would be a sizeable bill and hard to justify unless the car was something I really desired.

I'm happy with 28mpg average in a very easy car to live with on a day to day basis. On a good run I know I can get mid 30s.

I don't give a stuff if it gets 5mpg or 50mpg. Petrol is dirt cheap here, so long as the tank range isn't awful it's not a consideration.

Getting an average of 43 in mine as well ( and that is proper brim to brim calcs ) with a mix of 50% local roads and Motorway, average speed 31 mph. Manual 2007 D5 with 185bhp engine. If I baby it, I get 49, if I thrash it, 40. To me the most impressive figure is the 40mph thrashed, if I drove my last petrol car like that it went down to the teens.
