A couple of months ago, Mrs HD fancied a change of car. She wanted a new A5. Yes, I know but there you go.

Her runabout at the time was a 2003 Merc S Class. Still pretty nice. Decent "real" tyres, full, stamped MB & Indy service history, new alternator and gearbox cooler. No expense (and there was expense) spared when she ran it.

I couldn't really be arsed to PX it so looked on webuy.com, saw what they were offering and ultimately decided to put it in the local auction.

I especially couldn't be bothered to put it up privately as I wanted to avoid the usual array of Nigerian princes and the "what's your best price bruv, innit?"

Ultimately, I got a few hundred quid more that Webuy offered so good job all round although well into the smoker barge territory and not that much more than shed money.

Soooooo, here we are a couple of months later and I get a letter from the latest owner telling me that the DVD player has stopped working and that the telephone has never worked.
That didn't because the optional sim card thingy & phone wasn't fitted.

He tells me a new Command head unit is £2500 from Mercedes and so what do I want to do about it as the dealer he bought it from has given him the big fk Off tablet.

Yes, that's right, the car was auctioned, a dealer bought it, the dealer sold it, I owe him compensation.

There's an email address on the letter. Obvious thing is to ignore completely but I am tempted.

Just troll him until either he gets bored or so pissed off he doesn't reply.

Then put it up here and maybe an email address then everyone just randomenly message him about a car he sold 5 years ago going wrong.

Does smack of the buyer thinking "Oh sheet" then grasping at any straw, no matter how thin, in an attempt to get out of being left with the bill...

Unfortunately it's also a sad indictment of the way the country and culture is going.

No idea and I don't care one bit.

I'm happy with what I got from the auction and that's about it.

No idea what kind of dealer sold it on but I should imagine that it would be some kind of back street or kerbside operation tbh.
If he has a problem, it's between him and the dealer, certainly not me.
I just thought I was avoiding all the sold as seen shenanigans but seem not to have.

Now, I would like to add that this is not like the usual thread where the OP asks "what should I do?"

What I will do if he contacts me by any other means than a letter is to tell him to fk off.

Sounds like my neighbour, any problems he has with his property will start sending recorded letters to neighbours asking for 50 % of the bill with threats of legal action. When you tell him in no uncertain terms to pissoff he sends another letter to someone else. Sadly I think it's just a numbers game where eventually someone not so savvy gets scared and pays up

Poor buyer, left without a DVD player and in car phone that car is virtually useless. I mean you could only use it for driving from one place to another and what's the point of that?

This is basically it. There are enough fkwits out there to make these attempts worthwhile.

Fortunately, that's not me.

I was the 2nd owner so I could put him onto the first owner from new so he could ask him why he didn't spec the car with a built in phone biggrin

Yeah, and sue MB for not fitting it as standard too!!

I find this person's attempt to get money out of a previous owner simply mind boggling!!!

How thick can some people get??

Email him back and tell him you'll get back to him once you've got a reply from Austin Rover for selling your mum a car via 10 owners 20 years ago that's showing faint signs of rust!!

I would wipe my arse with the letter and post it back to him.

EDIT : probably not true.

I would probably respond along the lines of :-

We owned the car for X years and disposed of it via a public auction
A dealer bought the car with a view to making profit on it.
The dealer prepared the car and sold it to you.
The car developed a fault.
The dealer has declined your request to resolve the problem.

Can you talk me through why you think I am under ANY obligation to resolve this?

OP, I also suspect this S-class now has massive AMG wheels, badly painted in black, and aftermarket tints. I suspect there is also a gallon of fuel in it (innit) at any one time.

Maybe have a read of this site: http://www.dontevenreply.com
Before sending a reply, but give you some ideas on what to write.

Tell him the units are cheaper on ebay.

I am super tempted to reply and then let things go swiftly downhill from there but on reflection, the letter has been filed under "Bin"

Obviously, he has our address and whilst I don't mind him turning up when I'm there, I don't want Mrs HD to have to deal with anything when I'm away at work.
