Not sure it's going to be as successful as the current XC90. The current range retails for c.£30k for a top of the range model. £45k is quite a jump for the base model. The £30k barrier seems to be a ceiling for a lot of buyers.
No it doesn't. The Executive, after factory incentives, retailed at just under £40k. That was with the 0% finance offer.

But that doesn't matter. There are none left.

Besides. By the looks of things, the first lot of UK allocation is already sold out, so it's a mute point anyway.

Having mulled the design over a bit, I'm definitely warming to it. It's really quite handsome in the right colour and wheel combo.

EDIT: I've figured out why the design looks so cumbersome through certain angles. It's those pesky deployable steps (I think that's what they are anyway). Hopefully it can be specced without them.

EDIT 2: From what I understand (could be wrong), the AWD version will have a butchier bodykit:

Also, it looks better in motion: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Okwpvcu2N1o&fe...

The front and side view are a lot more generic than the last generation car and the inside looks exactly like a Jeep interior.

Not very Volvo.

I like the fact that it is boxy - good on Volvo for that. The current model is a staggeringly good design and still looks passable even though they've been on sale for ten years. Hard act to follow and I like that they've kept some of the features.

For me it all works apart from the central vent/iPad combo which looks very cheap - someone mentioned Jeep and that bit does look very American.

It'll be interesting to see how this design will age. I still remember when the 850 (with the vertical rear lights) and later the S80 came out. If it's any indication of things to come, I remember being an awful lot less impressed with those than I am with this.

It'll be interesting to see one in person. The design is very restrained compared to the slashes and swoops and endless details on most large cars you can buy today, which I suppose does make it look a bit bland a "generic" in comparison. I usually have no interest in 4x4 and other jacked up vehicles, but I could actually see me having one of these as a family car, so I'm hoping they replace the V70 soon with something along similar lines.

Most of all I'm a bit concerned about the all 4 cylinder engine lineup! They are boosted to hell and I can't help but think that they're going to be very effective but totally without character, which will be sad after the 5 pot engines.

I still think it looks good but am concerned that Volvo has succumbed to irrationally raising expectations in the exhaust pipe department. None of these things have anything greater than a straight 4 cyl engine so why the two huge parallelogram shaped holes under the rear bumper?

Surely the target market would appreciate having the solitary exhaust pipe hidden completely? Isn't exaggerating your emissions/power/noise contrary to the standards Volvo is trying to promote with this car?

With regards to the size and presence of the touch screen, I agree with the poster above who noted it looks a lot better than the faux iPad in recent Mercs. I would also have thought that a well executed, large & responsive touch screen could be more intuitive, ergonomic & safer than a mouse pointer or iDrive controller. Just guessing though - hopefully third party tests of the XC90 will confirm how well this system works.

Isn't the screen in the Tesla, to which this looks comparable, thought to work quite well?

P.S. No manual gearbox option. I know I am one of about 3 people total in the whole world who will care (& own a current manual XC90), but 'boo, hiss'.

The touch screen system will also have full Apple iOS integration, which will probably please/ps off people in equal measure hehe
Will also have Android Auto built in, according to this site:

Think you mean base price, as the basic ones go for about £37k

The top of the range one (I went on Volvo's website and ticked everything in the configurator)seems to be just over £50k.
They go for around £37k if you're stupid enough to pay list on a near decade old design. Last time I looked it was £30k for a base/mid and £34-35k from a broker for the bells and whistle.

The exterior is nicely done. The interior might be the most boring I've ever seen.

I like it but it looks like a Merc gL from the side, a x5 from the front and a v70 from the rear.

Will sell loads as it appears to be the only 4x4 that's not a land rover that doesn't get stick on here

I'm not a fan of the front, but the rear's nice.

The interior looks absolutely fantastic, the clean designs permitted by a near button-free console really works for me.

Audi at the front and Cayenne at the rear.

It does look nice as an overall package but i still think Volvo need to keep plugging away to shrug off the Grandpa image.

Its like Skoda - they needed a couple of generations of good, consistent models to lose the image. Now all of a sudden they are looking pretty sharp and credible.

I hate to be pedantic but I'd say they were nearer a trapezoid.

Or better to say 'I hate to be pedantic, but I would say they were more trapezoidal'.

I shall miss them cry But I wouldn't worry about boosting the engines like they have, BMW have long done it. Plus a man from F1 designed them cool

Brick st house, just like the old one. smile
That's very impressive. Perhaps they could pass some of their Swedish knowhow onto Geely. hehe

This new XC90 to my eyes looks pretty good. I have absolutely no doubt it'll be a very good car, but it will need to be with the current and future competition it has in this sector. The new BMW X5 is meant to be very good, plus there's a new Audi Q7 soon, which will likely be followed by an all-new Land Rover Discovery.

I'd say it looks like a Chinese copy of an X5 with an interior design team that were thumbing through a Maserati Ghibli brochure looking for inspiration.
