For so many used car buyers who have made good fortune at sellers expense relating to he tax left on it now have to think outside of the box why they think a like for like car is worth less tax length cannot be used. Happy days.
I have read this several times but am no clearer as to what you are talking about.

He is right, at the lower end of the market (sub £1k) car prices tend to be very related to how much tax is left. This will no longer be the case.

Nothing to be confused about as far as I can see - buy a car on 30/09 with 12 months tax (unlikely, I know) and Bob's your uncle. Do the same a day later and it's a different story.
11 months left , your tax disc started from the 1st of the month

It may be wrong as it was on the radio last month and things were very confused, but someone said that the monthly DD wouldn't be taken if the car wasn't insured or MOT'd. It, therefore, wouldn't be taxed.

The guy (I think a motoring journalist) put the following scenario...

I renewed my tax on 1st October and opt for the DD option. It's 27th of November and I put my car into the garage for it's MOT which runs out on the 29th. It fails the test and doesn't pass until 2nd December. On 1st December, my DD bounces because I have no MOT. The car gets fixed and I collect it on the 4th and drive it thinking that I am 100% legal.

Private number plates are going to be changed to some kind of chip that is read by a scanner. A bit like a tracker so its harder to change your cars 'internal number'

Anybody else miffed by the thousands of private sellers still advertising their car with loads of tax left? Do they not realise?
No, probably.
but surely if sold prior to 1st October then the tax will continue to run? Or is it that all cars sold where the tax overlaps the change date effectively lose the RFL on the "disc" and have to reapply? Confused?

Do we have a definitive answer on this? I'm likely buying my winter snotter on the weekend, it's advertised as taxed until Jan '15. Will this tax be mine, or will I lose it at the end of the month?

Logic dictates on the 1st of October the car will be mine and will have been for 10 days, thus the tax will remain valid. That said I'm brutally aware logic and the DVLA are not common partners.

My understanding is that if the tax was taken out for first use AFTER 1st Oct, the tax can't be transferred. If it was taken out for first use BEFORE 1st Oct (i.e. there is a tax disc), then the tax can be transferred.

No tax disc = not transferable.
Tax disc = transferable.

No, I don't think so. Everyone can rip up their tax discs 1 Oct anyway, so many cars with tax discs prior to 1 Oct won't have them anyway because they will have been binned.

From 1 Oct, you can't transfer tax, end of story. (I think!)

If it's this confusing for people who try to keep up with motoring stuff, how confusing will it be for the uninterested?

I just taxed my car online as it was due to expire on 30/09. So far I've been told on the website that I won't receive a tax disc and then on the email receipt that I will. And then that I won't as well. The email also states that I will only need to display my tax disc until 01/10. They don't seem to know their arse from their elbow either!

I quite like the bit where you can pay it monthly, ok, its a little bit more but it does mean I don't have to find £500 and give it them in one go.

We don't have to have a three inch diameter disk in the window.
Set up a separate bank account. Set up a DD for the monthly amount in your main account.

Hey presto, the joy of 12 smaller monthly installments but without paying the premium. biggrin
Yep. Did this after the Post Office ended saving stamps.

so what happens when i buy a new (to me) car.
if the VED is on the owner/keeper how can i tax it when the v5 is in the post and the system
does not know i own the car yet ?

do i have to have the car sat on the drive till the new V5 turns up before i can tax it?

I believe you can tax it with the new owner portion of the V5?

im assuming as much i just wonder if the new shiny system will recognise the change
of ownership before some bod at DVLA gets the other part of the form
or if it spits it out as you putting in a new name and address wont match
what it has in the database against the v5's current document number.

From money saving expert:

I'm looking to buy or sell a car before 1 October – what happens?

When selling a car, both the seller and the buyer need to fill in the vehicle registration certificate (V5C). The seller then gives the buyer the new keeper slip (V5C/2) and sends the rest of the V5C to the DVLA. The buyer won't need to do anything as the tax will be transferred.

The change is a great move

1. Save the DVLA (tax payer) money on stationary physical tax discs and the postage costs.
2. When you sell a car you only lose the balance on the current month to the new owner the remainder goes directly back to you from DVLA
3. No more haggling with a buyer on how much tax the car has as in effect every car will only ever come with up to 30 days of tax on it.
4. Uses technology to catch those who don't pay/removes the "oh I saw chap from number 3 looking at my car he must have shooed me in - let's sort him out" etc.

Bad move
1. Not everyone has the Internet at home so would have to go to the library
2. Older people may not use the Internet at all and accidentally think its taxes when not and then face fines
3. If Scotland leaves the UK they will have a different system
4. Why isn't this an EU wide scheme - allowing for different bindings relevant for each countries choice of taxing. It should be.
5. Annoying for those sad people like me who really like collecting all my old VED they will be missed

How will it impact SORN? Some classic car events for showing cars require you to show the Tax disc to help the organisers know if its tax free or not

Overall a superb move by the UK govt well done

Now hurry up with the V5 being all electronic too.
And great for a certain community who like white transits
Cloned plates anyone????

Yes I'm trying to tax online too and neither the old nor the new system will even load.
