I'm picking up a 64 plate 1 series on Monday. In 28 years of motoring, it'll be my first ever new car.

I didn't deliberately plan to collect it in line with the first day of the new plates, but when I was told delivery would be early September, it seemed the right thing to do for my first new one.

I also remember the excitement as a child looking out for the first new plates when they came in on 1 August. Not so exciting these days when they change every 6 months, but I suspect I'll be like a child on Christmas eve on Sunday night. 2pm pickup, so I cam drive Mrs L up the wall all morning.
Superb Sir. Please enjoy the experience smile

Takes me back to when we use to deliver them.

All factory fresh, covered up interior...etc.

Just casually parked up in a garden center car park, there was loads of other BMWs and a load more MINIs.
There's a BMW dealer just along the road, but seemed odd these were stored where they were for anyone to have access too!

I've got a 64 plate Fiesta ST being delivered Monday. Quite a departure from the 10 year old Cayenne Turbo it's replacing and hopefully enough fun to keep me entertained while my old 911 gets a full refresh over winter.

I've seen surprisingly few 14 plates. I live in the affluent suburbs of London (married well!).

Maybe I'm just desensitised to white goods cars, I'm much more likely to notice a nice 90s 3-box for example.

I suppose it is just a bit of fun, makes the "new car" experience a bit more special, no?

Picking mine up on Monday, my first ever new car. I hadn't realised when I was looking it was new plate time because I just don't pay attention to that kind of thing. I'm sure some of the cars in the preparation area are already on the new plates but I still didn't notice when visiting again on Monday.

Poor dealer had to pretty much spell it out, I was getting confused why I had to wait until Monday to get the car and why couldn't I get it on Saturday. It was a nice bonus in my eyes to have the new plate for the first time ever but not a big deal, I only went for new because I got a better deal on that than the 12 month old example they had in stock.

I recall a local Land Rover dealer storing new car stock in a farmer's field ready for the new registration and an angry ram managed to make it's way over the fence from the field nextdoor to attack it's own reflection in the paintwork of the new cars. It ended up denting several of them.

My first spot was four brand new DAF tractor units in Royal Mail livery heading down the M6 today.

If resale value matters to you the registration will make a difference. Come resale time a car registered this week will be worth less than an identical one registered next week because the number on the registration will mean it's perceived as being significantly newer.

Personally, I couldn't be bothered to visit the dealers at midnight just to collect a car, but each to their own.

However, it's people wetting themselves when they see new plate cars that I find really mystifying confused

Seen half a dozen 64 plate Citroen Vans, and a couple Fiat 500's, including Abarths.

I seen a BMW 2 Series the other day, at first glance it looked like a "15" plate. I was so confused I went back to have a look at it but it turned out it was a private plate, something like L15AAD frown

All to do with the dealers getting shot of the news cars, very little to do with the customers driving away at midnight.

When I was a Salesman, you'd be selling and delivering cars every day of the week, there are stloads of paperwork on a car, especially if you include finance, then you've got handover etc. This however would be a steady stream of customers booked in over a few days to collect at different times of day, whenever your diary and theirs worked. New reg day - everyone picks up at the same time, forecourt/showroom is loaded, admin are in meltdown over paperwork, valeters are flat out and customers are circling. If you can get rid of half or more of the handovers, all in one go, at midnight, it makes life a million times easier the next day.

The number plate system doesn't bother me any more... the changes happen so often, having the latest plate isn't special to me.

Picked up our new van on Wednesday last week - on a 14 plate. Wasn't worth waiting for 64.

Spotted a new Range Rover presumably out on test last week. Think the trade plate was stuffed on top of the dashboard. This was near Stirling, so I assume it was being driven by a dealer.

Would it not effect resale value? Surely waiting a week would see your van as more appealing/worth more if it was on a newer plate come sale time?

Maybe depreciation is less than cost of missing the work the van's needed for in week 1?

My wife's new Mini Cooper S could be parked up somewhere like that - she only collects hers on the 6th Sept.

We'll have two new car's for the first time, both collected within a few days of each other.

It is true the new plate holds less significance over here in the UK with the 6 month change but I'll always opt for a new plate if it is within a month or so of the car's expected delivery date.

That.

Plus, we keep vans for 4-5 years. The difference between two weeks and a reg plate will probably equate to no more than a couple of hundred quid by that time.

Today the van is off down to Shaftesbury with a complete pool kit in it (skimmers, drains, pump, filter, heat pump plus pipe and fittings) - we couldn't have done that in the Combo van!

16 years in sales in the motor trade, I've never had a customer collect a car at midnight. Dealerships are open enough hours as it is thank you very much wink

On a van? Not really, 3 or 4 years down the line condition and mileage are far more important. Vans are tools, they're there to enable the owner to earn money!
