Replace.

That's pretty serious damage. OK, you can't see the cords but it's clearly had a hefty whack and you don't know what damage may have been done to the structure underneath.

Thanks for the advice so far.. that's probably the best photo I can get tonight - the flash was on!
All you see underneath is black rubber.
Looks to me like at least one cord has been cut. I'd replace.

Where?

OP, rub your finger up and down the exposed part.

If you go fk fk fk many times, replace the tyre...

If not then I reckon you will be ok. Tyres today can stand a massive amount of abuse.

I had a play with the picture in photo editor and can't see anything but rubber. It looks to have torn a chunk out of the kerb protector, but nothing deeper, and that is exactly what the kerb protector is there for.

If you can't see cords, it's fine.

Although just as a caveat, I would like to see a better picture

The problem with PH, is that you could post "I've been vomiting blood for the last five hours, should I consult a doctor?"

And most would tell you "YES, seek medical advice immediately"

But there will always be one or two knobblers that advise "It'll probably sort itself, the human body can take a lot of abuse."

The thing is they wouldn't take their own advice, and neither should you. Just because some idiot advises you to put your wellbeing in jeopardy, you shouldn't do it.

Your tyres and brakes carry your life, don't try to save a few quid here.

This, the picture isn't good enough to make a judgement, I have the same on my front tyres and had them looked at, just the rim protecter, now he could have replaced them and had my money, he did comment on his roaring trade in part worns because of people over reacting and binning tyres.

There's definitely only rubber showing, but I'm still leaning towards replacement.. Thanks for all your comments!

Been driving my 172 with a tyre like that for over a year, passed at least one MoT.
Not a problem to me, clearly is to others though so your call.

Does anyone know how you get that kind of damage?

I did something very similar parking - the tyre gets trapped up against the kerb and "protects" the rim (its thick there for that purpose).

I ran a set of tyres with similar damage to the end of their life with no issues, including track days. If you can't see the ply I'd be keeping it. It will pass an MoT no problem.

I got mine driving over a shingle track road. I chose to ignore the very similar tear, but got the local tyre place to check it over and could see no cord. I do keep an eye on it though

Its a nick out of the rim protecter its what it was designed for. No cords showing so no real need to change it.
But its your choice at the end of the day.

Conversely, you can show them a picture of a slightly bruised forearm and there will be those that will swear to you it's gangrene and you should have your arm amputated immediately.

OP if you are worried, just take it to a reputable tyre place and get them to look at it.
